While some two dozen young players were fielding grounders and throwing the baseball around the infield on Tuesday at Newtown High School, just a few steps away another 60 or so were learning fundamental field hockey drills on the tennis courts.

That is but a mere sampling of the sports camp offerings available to Newtown residents.

The Nighthawk Baseball Camp is running in two sessions (June 26-30 and July 10-14) while the Field Hockey Camp is running just one session (June 26-30).

And among many other things, there is Newtown Lacrosse Camp (July 10-14 at Treadwell Park) where instructors Brian Micena and Chuck Chioda will teach all the basic aspects of the game.

MLS Soccer Camp will meet July 10-14 and MLS certified coaches will run young players through a variety of fun and exciting drills.

The Lacrosse Academy will take over Treadwell Park July 17-21 as Nazareth College head coach Rob Randall will lead young players through extensive instruction of the fundamentals of the game. All-American and professional lacrosse players will be on hand.

Youth golf lessons will be held Thursdays through July 27 at the Newtown Country Club, under the guidance of pro Paul Miller.

The Bret Nichols Basketball Camp will be at Newtown Middle School July 17-21 as the former pro player and motivational speaker takes young players through competitive games and daily contests.

Flag football will take over the Newtown High School upper field throughout July as young players learn the rules and skills involved.

Tennis lessons and match play will be held throughout the summer at Dickinson Park under the guidance of co-directors Greg Sansonetti and Dave Kardas. Pro Gustavo Raes will return.

And Skyhawks Sports Camps - featuring Tiny Hawks, Mini Hawks, street hockey, soccer volleyball and flag football - will visit Newtown Middle School, Dickinson and Treadwell Parks.
