Police Investigate Firebomb Incident

Police are investigating a Botsford incident which occurred late July 21 or early July 22 in which someone hurled a firebomb in an unsuccessful attempt to set fire to a vacant commercial building on South Main Street.

Police said they received a report at 9:43 am July 22 about vandalism at 365 South Main Street. That address holds a small, vacant commercial building on the east side of South Main Street at its intersection with Swamp Road. The building has held various commercial uses during the past decade. The site is adjacent to the Monroe town line.

Police said someone smashed two Plexiglas front windows on the building. The vandal or vandals then attempted to throw a homemade firebomb into the building, but the device malfunctioned and did not ignite, police said.

The case involves third-degree arson, second-degree criminal mischief, and bomb manufacturing, police said. Second-degree criminal mischief indicates damage in the range of $250 to $1,500.

Sergeant James Mooney said police are investigating the circumstances.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them at the police station at 426-5841 or to contact the town fire marshal at 270-4370.
