Respite Camp For Caregivers
Respite Camp For Caregivers
ASHFORD â A special one-week respite for grandparents, great-aunts, and great-uncles who are now caring for their young relatives has been scheduled at Camp Connri. The week of August 3â9 has been set aside to give caregivers a week of âvacationâ while their 7â11- year-old kin are enjoying a week of camping on the same beautiful campus.
Camp Connri, run by The Salvation Army, is a 25-year old, 272-acre camp site where campers enjoy swimming, fishingand boating in a 50-acre lake, arts and crafts, recreation of all kind, great food, and comfortable lodging.
This special week has been held for three years, and provides an opportunity for rest, fun, fellowship and support to families who are now experiencing âparenting, the second time around.â Relative caregivers, particularly grandparents, are one of the fastest-growing populations, and the economic and psychological impact that comes with becoming a second-time caregiver puts a great strain on families.
âSecond-time around support groups are more well known in larger cities, but these groups and information for people in more rural areas are not as prevalent. This camp gives caregivers a chance to meet other adults in similar circumstances and get the support they need,â says Joyce Kristof, one of the campâs coordinators.
