St Rose Scouts Honored
During Religious Awards Ceremony
Newtown scouts were honored during the annual Religious Award Ceremony of the Catholic Committee on Scouting on June 1. The Most Reverent William E. Lori presided as 13 Cub Scouts and 13 Girl Scouts from Pack 570 (St Rose of Lima) were presented with their religious awards. In addition to the scouts from St Rose School, were three Cub Scouts from Pack 156 and Pack 170, plus three Boy Scouts from Crew 100, Troop 370, and Troop 770, all of Newtown, who were honored.
The St Rose School fourth grade Scouts, Webelos 1 (Pack 570, Den 3), were awarded the Parvuli Dei.
Parvuli Dei translates as âChildren of Godâ and is recognition given to Cub or Webelo Scouts for advancement in religious knowledge and spiritual information. Its purpose is to help the boy become more aware of Godâs presence in his daily life, especially within his home and community.
Receiving the award were Thomas Meier, Daniel Colucci, Drew Oberg, Jordan Marussich, Jack Beal, John Locke, Timothy Moore, and Chris Brown.
The first and second grade Tigers and Wolves earned the Light of Christ Emblem. The purpose of this program is to help the Tiger Cub or Wolf Cub Scout develop a personal relationship with Jesus.
Receiving the Christ Emblem were Cyril Brown, Zachary DeMeglio, Gabriel Locke, Cullen Moore, and Nicholas Sobotka.
Three Cub Scouts from other Newtown packs, but all from St Rose Church, received the Parvuli Dei. They were Thomas Jensen (Pack 156), and Matthew Maturo and Frank Rohrbacher (Pack 170).
One of the oldest religious awards available to Boy Scouts, the Ad Altare Dei was originally given to recognize those Boy Scouts who also were altar servers. Today the honor, whose name translates to âthe altar of God,â is designed to help Catholic Scouts of the Roman Rite develop a fully Christian way of life in the faith community. Tyler Hoffman of Troop 370, Matthew Jenson of Troop 770, and Nick Wolf of Crew 100 were presented with the award last week.
Also honored during the ceremony were the adult unit leaders who have made a commitment to the Catholic Committee on Scoutingâs membership initiative. Presented with The Golden Bow were Alice Walsh of Newtown and Donna Locke of Sandy Hook, both leaders in Pack 570, St Rose of Lima.
In addition Pack 570 was awarded the Pope Paul VI Unit Recognition again this year. The purpose of this award is to recognize Catholic chartered institutions that provide each boy with a top-quality program encompassing all of Scoutingâs religious and educational aspects.
