Nissan Vs Mercury

Police report a two-vehicle accident near the driveway entrance to 25 Church Hill Road about 3:24 pm August 3.

The collision involved motorist Gaetano Mascolo, 53, of 32 Black Bridge Road, who was driving a 2004 Nissan Maxima, and motorist Jean Passero, 64, of 2 Mt Pleasant Road, who was driving a 2002 Mercury Sable, police report.

There were no injuries. Mascolo received a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Warrant

On August 8, police charged Brenda Jo Locke, 47, of Dogwood Terrace at her residence on a warrant in connection with a motor vehicle accident that occurred last March near 99 South Main Street. Police said they charged Locke with driving an unregistered motor vehicle, driving a vehicle without automotive insurance, and possession of narcotics. Police released Locke on a written promise to appear in court August 22. 

Swamp Road

About 8:12 pm August 7, police were positioned alongside Swamp Road and using radar speed detection equipment, when they found that motorist Paul Moniz, 30, of Brookfield was driving a 47 miles per hour in a 25-mph speed zone.

Police said they stopped Moniz to investigate, after which they charged him with traveling too fast, improper use of marker plates, and with driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

Following processing, police released Moniz on a written promise to appear in court on August 21.

Shoplifting

Police report that store security personnel at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street in the borough saw Erick DaSilveira, 21, of Port St Lucie, Fla., taking various electronic items from store shelves and then concealing them in his pants on the afternoon of August 10.

Store security staffers apprehended DaSilveira, after which they called police.

Police arrested DaSilveira on a charge of sixth-degree larceny. He was released on $50 bail for an August 24 court appearance.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Michael Santiago, 23, of Bridgeport turned himself over to police at the police station on the morning of August 10 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, traveling too fast for conditions, and with driving while under suspension.

Police said that Santiago had failed to appear in court in connection with a November 2006 incident involving the two motor vehicle charges.

After posting $500 bail, police released Santiago for an August 24 court appearance.

Saturn Vs Chevrolet

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Elm Drive at the entrance to Newtown Village Cemetery about 3:11 pm Aug 6.

Motorist Jessica Shepard, 18, of 25 Bankside Trail, who was driving a 1996 Chevrolet C-10 pickup truck southward on Elm Drive, slowed to make a right turn into the cemetery’s driveway, police report.

Southbound motorist Rafael Fabrega-Freer, 51, of 7 Sugar Street, who was driving a 1994 Saturn coupe, then attempted to pass the Chevrolet on the right, police said.

The vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Fabrega-Freer received a misdemeanor summons for passing on the right and for having allowed his automotive insurance to expire, police said.

South Main Crash

About 10:30 am August 11, motorist Eileen Larsen, 50, of Monroe, who was driving a 2006 Chrysler 300 sedan northward near 105 South Main Street, slowed to make a right turn into a commercial driveway and was then struck from behind by northbound motorist Miller Filsner, 28, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 1999 Ford E-250 van, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Filsner an infraction ticket for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and for driving without a license.

Mirror-To-Mirror

About 1:30 pm August 11, motorist Andrew Cluff, 51, of 19-A Georges Hill Road was driving a 1998 Ford Econoline van northward on Poverty Hollow Road, police said.

At that time, motorist Juliana Swihart, 27, of Redding was driving a 2003 GMC pickup truck southward there, police report.

Both of the vehicles have large exterior rear-view mirrors. The two vehicles encountered one another at one of the several narrow bridges on Poverty Hollow Road. Such areas are marked with warning signs, police said.

As the two vehicles passed one another in opposite directions on the narrow bridge, their left rear-view exterior mirrors collided and shattered, police said.

Cluff received some cuts, which were treated at the scene by ambulance corps volunteers, police said. Police took no enforcement.

Sandy Hook Accident

About 10:39 pm July 19, motorist Michael Mondo, 24, of Monroe was driving a 2004 Ford pickup truck northward on Jordan Hill Road, when he reached its intersection with Berkshire Road (Route 34) and then drove across both lanes of Berkshire Road before colliding with a stone wall, police said.

Mondo received a wrist injury. Police gave Mondo an infraction for failure to drive in the established lane.

 

Minivan Spinout

Motorist Diane McInerney, 51, of Pennington, N.J., was driving a Toyota Sienna minivan eastward on Interstate 84, about one mile west of Exit 10, about 10 pm August 10, when the trailer that she was towing began to wobble, state police said.

McInerney lost control of the minivan, spun out, and the struck a 30-foot section of metal-beam guardrail, state police said. The minivan carried three passengers. There were no injuries. State police said McInerney was traveling too fast for conditions.

Ramp Crash

State police report an accident on the Exit 10 on-ramp for eastbound Interstate 84 about 7:50 am August 8.

Motorist Jeremy Barczak, 21, of 21 Grand Place, who was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck, was traveling on the ramp in light rain and then struck some guard cabling, state police said. Barczak was not injured. State police issued Barczak an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

The ramp is the scene of many accidents in wet conditions.

Barnabas Road Theft

Police report the theft of two lightweight motorcycles, known as “dirt bikes,” from a barn on Barnabas Road in Hawleyville.

Police said the theft occurred sometime between July 21 and August 6. One of the motorcycles is white and the other is yellow. Also stolen was a wooden ramp.

The crime represents second-degree larceny, a felony in which the loss exceeds $5,000.

Barnabas Road runs parallel to Interstate 84. It links Tunnel Road to Hawleyville Road.

Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with information to contact them at 426-5841 or 270-8888.

Slippery Road

Police report a motor vehicle accident on a hazardous wet section of Castle Hill Road, near its intersection with King Street.

While traveling on a curve on Castle Hill Road about 5:30 pm August 10, motorist Greg Cullen, 46, of 10 Orchard Hill Road, who was driving a 1997 Saturn coupe, was unable to stop and struck the rear end of a 2001 Honda CRV driven by Geraldine Brown, 45, of 64 Toddy Hill Road, police said.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Cullen for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Missing Beetle

About 5:20 pm August 9, motorist Kevin Lin, 16, of Easton was driving a 2005 Subaru Impreza sedan northward on South Main Street and approaching a driveway entrance to Sand Hill Plaza, when a Volkswagen Beetle driven by an unknown person pulled out of that driveway and headed northward, cutting in front of the Subaru, police said.

The Subaru swerved to the left to avoid a collision but struck some curbing, police said. Lin was not injured.
