Sculpture Barnâs Annual Member Artist Exhibition Will Open October 20
NEW FAIRFIELD â âAtelier IV,â the annual member artist exhibition at Sculpture Barn, features contemporary works created on site in master sculptor David Boyajianâs Atelier.
The exhibit will open Saturday, October 20, in the gallery at Sculpture Barn, at the intersection of Milltown Road and Route 39, on the Danbury line. âAtelier IVâ will remain on view through November 18.
A public reception with participating artists in attendance is planned for Sunday, October 21, from 3 to 6 pm. All artwork is for sale and refreshments will be served.
âAtelier IVâ will showcase new sculpture in steel, bronze, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, stone and wood by 26 artists from Fairfield, Westchester and Putnam counties. Sculpture Barn founders David and Carter Boyajian are the curators of the group exhibit and David Boyajianâs outdoor steel sculptures are on view in the four-acre sculpture field.
With over 70 pieces representing a contemporary approach to traditional media, the art of âAtelier IVâ ranges from Marcia Spivakâs majestic horses out of steel, Eric Camielâs torch-cut steel figures, to Giovanna Schwartzâs cast stone tiles. Sculpture Barnâs resident artist Katie Bassett will be showing her copper âgarmentâ sculptures complete with accessories and Jerome Harris Parmet will exhibit his large scale modern steel pieces outdoors in the Sculpture Field.
Sculpture Barnâs 4,000-square foot studio is equipped with multiple welders; cutting, forming and grinding machines; pneumatic chisels and hand tools. Mr Boyajian offers classes in metal fabrication, stone and wood carving.
During the run of the exhibit on Friday nights at 8, the gallery will become a theater showing documentary films about 20th Century contemporary sculpture. Designed to educate and entertain, short films about Great Sculptors are to be shown followed by discussion led by a Sculpture Barn member artist. The films depict the life and work of such accomplished artists as Donald Judd, Tony Cragg, Andy Goldsworthy and Barbara Hepworth. The Great Sculptors film series is free, however the public is required to phone or email to reserve seats. Popcorn is on the house; bring your own beverage.
âThis is our favorite exhibit every year,â said David Boyajian. âIt is my pleasure to facilitate these artistsâ unique visions in my studio, and Iâm proud to show their work in our gallery. It brings everything full circle and the Great Sculptors film series adds an educational dimension to the month long exhibition.â
In addition to âAtelier IV,â Robert Alberetti will be exhibiting small paintings and collages. Although not a member of the Atelier, Mr Alberetti is a well known local artist and good friend of Sculpture Barn. A portion of proceeds from the sale of Mr Alberettiâs work will be donated to the Candlewood Art Fund, a donor advised fund under the New Fairfield Community Foundation.
Sculpture Barn is a self supporting art center dedicated to fostering dialogue between artists and collectors via exhibitions, classes and performance events. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
