NHS Track Athletes Break Records In National Competition

Newtown High School’s track and field competitors had several outstanding performances in the New Balance Outdoor National Track and Field Championships in Greensboro, NC this past weekend.

Junior Jake Feinstein competed in the 5000 meter race on June 14. The field consisted of the top 40 distance runners in the country.

Feinstein won the first of two heats in an extremely fast time of 15:02 and finished 11th in the Nation. His time shattered the school record by better than 1:20 and was the fastest time by a high school runner in all of New England in 2012.

In the Distance Medley Relay (1200, 400, 800, 1600) Newtown’s team of senior Palmer Lintz (1200), senior Peter Kerns (400), senior Dieter Gutbrod (800), and Feinstein (1600) ran an impressive time of 10:28, also setting a school record. The team finished 17th in the nation.

Newtown High senior pole vaulter Lauren O’Connell represented the girls’ squad with a nice effort on the field side as she finished 15th in the nation.
