Sign Up Now For ‘Lose The Litter Day’

The Newtown Lions Club and the Newtown Junior Woman’s Club will sponsor Newtown’s annual “Lose the Litter Day” on April 29, from 9 am to 1 pm, with a rain date of May 6.

Residents of Newtown will band together to clean up roadsides in town. Volunteers may pick up bags and gloves at the Newtown Middle School from 9 am to 1 pm on the day of the event, although the actual cleanup may be done at anytime during the day.

Volunteers may select a particular road or they may be assigned a road on the day of the event. Participants who find one of the coveted “golden cans” will win tickets to the movies at Edmond Town Hall.

The litter collected by participants may be dropped off at the nearest firehouse. The Highway Department will pick up the accumulated trash and haul it away.

This is Newtown’s 12th “Lose the Litter Day.” The project was started by Judy Holmes and the Newtown Environmental Action Team, which ran the program for the first six years. The Newtown Lions have continued the project in recent years. In the past, the project has drawn wide support from town residents, and more than 200 volunteers have turned out to give the town’s roadsides a thorough spring cleaning.

Anyone interested in more information or in volunteering for a particular road may call the project chairman, Jerome Mayer, at 426-9282.
