Slug: Kaminski Auctions’ New Year’s Weekend Auction January 1-2

LYNNFIELD, MASS. — Kaminski Auctioneers and Appraisers will conduct its annual New Year’s weekend auction on Saturday and Sunday, January 1 and 2, at the Sheraton Colonial Center Ballroom. Saturday’s sale will feature a collection of rugs from all major rug producing countries and Sunday’s sale will showcase furniture, fine art, decorative accessories and military artifacts from the Eighteenth through early Twentieth centuries.

Prominent pieces will include an Eighteenth Century Queen Anne highboy, an Eighteenth Century Salem, Mass., Chippendale chaise with shell carved motif, an early Federal Salem sideboard with butler’s desk interior, a Nineteenth Century center table with pietra dura top, gilt walnut base and heavily carved winged griffins, and a Nineteenth Century Empire mahogany recamier with gold trim.

Of special interest will be furnishings from the Chestnut Street, Salem, Mass., home of Dr and Mrs Arthur Kavanaugh that will include an early Nineteenth Century Hepplewhite mahogany inlaid sideboard, a Federal gilt mirror with eglomise panels and a Queen Anne walnut diminutive highboy with herringbone inlay, and an Eighteenth Century Chippendale walnut half-chest.

Also included in the auction will be important pieces of artwork such as Leon Gaspard’s “Village,” oil on board; a signed Alfred S. Mira “Shanties,” oil on canvas; Anthony Thieme’s “El Torero #44,” oil on canvas; Charles Morant’s “Gloucester Harbor near Bristol, England,” oil on board; and a Laura Hills still life pastel Marcoussis gouache and watercolor abstract. Other highlights will include a signed Pierre Varnier bronze sculpture entitled “Lying Alsatian,” a Twentieth Century Loetz art glass vase, and a Lalique crystal eagle head hood ornament.

The military artifacts will include a US Revolutionary War cartridge box; Civil War items such as an engineer’s kepi, a French pattern shako hat, frock and drummer coats and a US 71st Militia officer’s coat, as well as items from World Wars I and II.

Slug: Christies’ Dec. 7 Auction Proves Market For Popular Collectibles Remains Strong

NEW YORK CITY — Christie’s Rock and Roll and Entertainment Memorabilia auction, conducted on December 17, sold 302 of the 365 lots offered, grossing $2,173,759. “The results of this auction prove that the market for popular culture collectibles remains strong,” according to Darren Julien, CEO and president of Julien’s.

The top lot was a 1964 Gibson SG standard guitar, owned and played by George Harrison, that sold for $567,500. The next lot was an Academy Award for Best Picture of How Green Was My Valley, 1941, that brought $95,600. A  John Lennon “Imagine” acetate with handwritten notes, 1971, brought $71,700; John Lennon interview tapes, never before heard, 1975, sold for $53,775; and a vintage suit owned and worn by Paul McCartney sold for $53,775.

Other memorabilia that sold include: one sheet from The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, 1919, bringing $65,725; Elvis Presley’s leather stage pants, circa 1970s, brought $35,850; a Gibson SG owned and played by Jerry Garcia, circa 1967, sold for $41,825; Bob Dylan’s signature and handwritten lyrics on an album cover, 1968, brought $33,460 and John Lennon’s Grammy Award for “Michelle,” 1965, sold for $35,850.
