Newtown Teen Attends Military Academy
Local resident Jack Wilson, a cadet at Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) in Woodstock, Va., has been asked by the president of MMA, Colonel Roy Zinser, to attend the Cadet Leadership Academy this upcoming summer and has been offered a scholarship to attend. Cadet Wilson has been selected to serve as a cadet leader to assist students for the school year 2007-2008. Cadet Wilson will be attending MMA next year for the eighth grade.
Cadet Wilson, the son of Patrick Wilson of Newtown and Nina Wilson of Sandy Hook, has proven himself to be a capable leader and participant in many activities at MMA, including public service, civic activities, Boy Scouts, band, and sports. Cadet Wilson received two varsity letters for his efforts in school sports and was the team manager of the wrestling team, leading his squad to the state championship in the small school division, a rare feat as it was the first year the team was formed. Cadet Wilsonâs young age prevented his active participation on the squad. Cadet Wilson earned the Commandantâs Silver Star for his high grade point average and is class leader in many classes.
MMA, founded in 1899, maintains a co-ed international student body and is subject to the Department of the Army inspections and is a Gold Standard ROTC Academy. The college placement is 100 percent for the last six years and many graduates are accepted into the military academies.
