Two of the top performances in the opening week of The Gym at Newtown Menâs Basketball League last week went all for naught as both came on the short side of the score.

Austin Bowes pumped in 29 points, but Mark Svanda Painting dropped a 71-55 decision to Newtown Phone Book. And Corey Dunn dropped in 27 points, but My Place Pizza dropped a 58-55 decision to Total Pool & Spa.

The games â

Aaron Vangor canned 16 points and Kevin Carolan added 14 more to lead Pantan Landscaping to the win. Tim Byrne chipped in with nine points while John Pantan and Nick Savino added six points apiece. For Mobil, James Parker popped in 16 points as Adam Hayden and Pat Mullins scored 12 points apiece.

Kevin Barrett scored 19 points and Frank Galante â with a trio of three-pointers â added 15 more to lead Total Pool over My Place Pizza. Phil Kraska and Tom Santella scored seven points each. For My Place, Jeff Moxham scored 13 points to support the 27-point effort of Dunn as Dave Samoskevich and Mike Sullivan combined for 15 more.

Rob Merryfield scored 23 points and Steve Bigham canned 18 more to lead Newtown Phone Book past Svanda Painting, 54-51. Steve Nowacki chipped in with 12 points. For Svanda, Jerry Reidy supported the 29-point effort of Bowes with 14 points of his own. Todd Suhar and Pete Antonopolos combined for 12 more.

Not approving a development that has "checked" all the boxes because the NIMBY mob doesn't like it is wrong.

The town historically has strong collaboration with developers, but the primary obstacle arises from community opposition exerting undue influence on the zoning department. This "NIMBY" pressure often leads to project rejections that exceed the department's actual jurisdiction or authority. Consequently, developers face a limited set of options: either engage in expensive legal battles or leverage the Connecticut Affordable Housing Land Use Appeals Procedure (CGS § 8-30g) as a recourse.

You are correct, Bruce. I know how hard these plans are to put together, but I still believe that we can have more definitive and measurable goals. I know there are a number of units coming online, and the community truly needs them. If only we can move the development of affordable housing to more of a partnership between the community and the developers than the adversarial tug-of-war it seems to be now, that would be good progress.
