NAACP Planning 50th Anniversary Celebration

DANBURY — On Sunday, June 10, The Greater Danbury National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) celebrated 50 years in existence. The chapter’s officers in 1957 included Chanuney Hodins, chairman, and Roy Wilkins, secretary.

Over the past 50 years, this chapter has remained resilient during changing times and has endured, overcome, and diligently worked toward building a better community for all.

The chapter’s current president is the Reverend Ivan S. Pitts. To celebrate the chapter’s 50th anniversary a Freedom Fund Dinner is being planned for Thursday, October 18, at the Ethan Allen Inn. The dinner, a national event that occurs with each chapter, is an opportunity for local business and community leaders and residents to come together for an evening of support, reflection, remembrance, and appreciation of their chapter.

The Greater Danbury NAACP chapter will welcome Raphael G. Warnock as the keynote speaker. The Reverend Warnock is senior pastor of the historical Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga., home to the distinguished Civil Rights leaders Rev Martin Luther King Sr and Rev Martin Luther King Jr.

For more details on the dinner including ticket prices, contact Cheryl Price at 482-1235 or Cindy Clarke at 994-0099.
