U12

Westport Worldwide captured the U12 championship with three straight playoff wins as the pitching staff of Dan Poeltl, Mike Koch, Mike Lobosco and Pat Sullivan held opponents to only four hits in three games, including a one-hitter over Noyes-Ryder in the championship game.

Westport Worldwide 9, Noyes-Ryder 1 – Alex Roche, Pat Sullivan and Mike Koch blasted third-inning home runs, leading Westport Worldwide to a championship game victory at Glander Field on Sunday. Roche and Poeltl each stroked two hits and scored two runs for the victors. Poeltl and Brandon Cooper smacked doubles and PJ Hickey and Mac Morlock each slapped a hit. Nick Barreto got Noyes-Ryder’s lone hit.

Noyes-Ryder 8, Lee J. Demers, Builder 6 – On a 2-2 count, Nick Barreto smashed a fifth-inning, game-tying grand slam that yanked Noyes-Ryder from the brink of playoff elimination on to a semi-final win over Lee J. Demers. The defense was also the story for Noyes-Ryder as catcher Gary Braun made an astonishing diving catch of a foul ball in the first inning. centerfielder Colton Sposta charged into deep right center for a run-saving leaping catch of a towering blast and third baseman Ryan Daignault made a clutch across-the-diamond throw for a key putout in the fourth inning. For Demers, Kyle Wilcox had a two-run double, and RBI single, and a steal of home to spark the offense. Kaleb Rowe added an RBI single and pitched two strong innings, picking off two runners. Dean Demers chipped in with an RBI single.

Westport Worldwide 6, Lee J. Demers, Builder 5 – Mike Lobosco blooped a clutch single to left field, and the ball was misplayed, allowing Chris Robinson to score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning for Westport Worldwide. Pat Sullivan smashed a three-run homer and doubled in another run to spark the offense. Dan Poeltl shined in the field and pitched two shutout innings. For Demers, Tyler Gibney had a two-run single and Sean Dardine doubled. Nicky Sajovic drove in a run on a groundout.

Lee J. Demers 10, Onex 9 – Down 9-7 with one out and no one on base in the final inning, the Steamers bounced back for a clutch victory at Glander Field. Richie Sandler had a two-run double, Ben Stoller and Tyler Gibney stroked RBI singles, and Dean Demers came on in relief and retired the side in order in the sixth to pick up the save. For Onex, Reid Schmidt, Kevin LeBlanc and Michael Lengel collected two hits apiece. Chad Magoulas and Jack Champagne banged out key singles.

U10

Mastercard International defeated Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital (5-3), Fairfield County Irrigation (11-4), BW Retail Real Estate (10-4) and Newtown Mobil (15-5) to captured the U10 division championship.

Mastercard International 15, Newtown Mobil 5 – After falling behind 4-0 after one inning, Mastercard exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning enroute to the U10 division championship. Markus Elken and Brandon Powell each went 3-for-3 with two runs scored with Powell adding four RBI. Jonathan Sherman and Jimmy Widmann stayed red hot with a two-hit, two-RBI performance each. Brenden Grant once again hit the ball well and collected another hit and scored twice. John Bashak and Sherman played outstanding defense in help shutting down the high explosive offense of Newtown Mobil in the final innings.

Other playoff action –

Aerco International 6, Mobil 1 Lube Express 5 – Mobil 1 took a 4-0 lead on a two-run single by Devon Palila and RBI by Travis Audet (single) and Julian Dunn (double), but Aerco chipped away and then came roaring back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win. Connor Miller and Greg Grasso were pitching standouts for Mobil 1, combining for eight strikeouts.

Mastercard International 5, Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital 3 – Markus Elken, Will Swain and Brandon Powell combined on a five-hitter to lead Mastercard to the win. Colton Smith and Powell hit the ball hard and combined for 3 doubles for Mastercard with teammate John Bashak scoring the winning run in the 6th inning. For Mount Pleasant, Jim Parker, Jon Rospenda and Forest Speed also combined for a five-hitter. Dowd collected two hits in the losing effort.

Mobil 1 Lube Express 4, Cascone Painting 4 – Mobil 1 Lube Express came back in the bottom of the sixth in this hard fought contest to take the win and stay alive in the playoffs. Cascone Painting went up early in the first inning with three runs, but a home run and RBI single by Julian Dunn and an RBI single by Jonathan Santyana brought Mobil 1 back. In the sixth, Dunn walked and was then able to steal two bases and score on an overthrow for the win. Carter Priolo (5 strikeouts) and Dunn (4 strikeouts) gave strong pitching performances for Mobil 1.

Mastercard International 11, Fairfield County Irrigation 4 – Brenden Grant, Jimmy Widmann, Jonathan Sherman and Colton Smith collected two hits each for Mastercard in the win. Markus Elken and Rhett Ehnot both scored twice in the victory. Mastercard had a narrow one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth when it exploded for seven runs as Smith and Grant each contributed a two-run single.

Mastercard International 10, BW Retail Real Estate 4 – Will Swain and Colton Smith combined to go 7-for-8 with five runs scored and two doubles to lead Mastercard to the win. John Bashak scored a run and James Barry scored twice for Mastercard.

Newtown Mobil 15, Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital 13 – Jim Parker, Nate Dowd and Forest Speed had multiple hit games and Joe Calbo provided solid outfield defense for Mount Pleasant.

U9

Associated Refuse captured the U9 division championship this past weekend, led by Michael Parker who went 6-for-7 with three walks, seven RBI and four runs scored in three playoff games. James Frazzetta knocked in the game-winning run in the championship game against Coldwell Banker with a single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Associated Refuse 6, Coldwell Banker 5 – James Frazzetta’s base hit in the bottom of the sixth scored Kevin Finnegan with the winning run to give Associated the championship. Matthew Ingwersen and Kevin Finnegan each had singles to start the winning rally and Michael Parker went 2-for-2 with a triple and a double and two RBI to lead the offense. Chris Calo had two hits and Patrick Berger had a big double to knock in key runs for Associated. Stephen Pansa made a great catch in the outfield with the bases loaded to stop a Coldwell rally in the fifth inning and Chris Calo made a nice defensive play in the sixth inning with the bases loaded to stop Coldwell again. For Coldwell Banker, Matt Maturo (6 Ks) and Liam Palilla (3 Ks) pitched four scoreless innings against the potent Associated lineup. For the offense, Nick Samuelson, Liam Palilla, James Accousti and Joey Duero each had two hits.

Associated Refuse 5, Turner Construction 2 – Patrick Berger had a key RBI single and made two nice defensive plays at first base to lead Associated past Turner in the semi-finals. Michael Parker went 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBI, Kevin Finnegan had a key single and Stephen Pansa reached base three times. Chris Calo and Jaret Devellis pitched well. For Turner Construction, Connor Ryan, Sam Czel and Jack Procaccini all pitched well and combined to strike out nine batters. Czel doubled and tripled and Joey Carrino had a long double to spark the offense.

Associated Refuse 8, Newtown Shell 1 – In the opening round of the playoffs, Associated Refuse was led by the pitching of Chris Calo, Jaret Devellis and Michael Parker who combined for nine strike outs. James Leuci reached base three times and stole a base and scored a key run. Keaton McCleary and Stephen Panza played great defense behind the plate and Matthew Ingwersen made a great play at third to stop a rally by Shell. For Shell, Matthew Perun hit a triple off the fence and James Carney hit a single.

Coldwell Banker 11, DINA 10 – Timely hitting and clutch pitching led Coldwell over Dina. Erik Street struck out the side in fifth-inning relief as Tim Vander Have pitched a gritty sixth to seal the victory. Hitting leaders were Matt Maturo (3-for-3, 3 runs, 3 RBI) and Liam Palilla (2-for-2, 2 runs). James Accousti scored twice. For DINA, Mike Doyle went 3-for-4 and scored three runs as Dillon Palumbo had two hits and scored four runs. Rob McCabe was 2-for-3 and scored two runs while Andrew Cragin had three RBI.

Coldwell Banker 10, Rich’s Key’s & Locks 2 – Matt Maturo, Liam Palilla and Joey Duero pitched masterfully and held the Patriots to two runs over five innings, striking out a combined 12 batters. Joey Duero (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Devin Peterson (2-for-2, 2 runs), Liam Palilla (2-for-2, 2 runs), and Danny McCarthy sparked the offense. For Rich’s Kyle McGrath went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases as Justin Appley drove in a run. Nathan Wutzke played strong in the field, including an unassisted put out a third.

Turner Construction 8, PC Metals 7 – Turner received outstanding pitching from Sam Czel, Jack Procaccini and Declan Sullivan (three hits allowed, 12 strikeouts) in a win over PC Metals. Liam McInerney sparked the offense with a three-run double as Joey Carrino and Chance McMahon both contributed RBI doubles to put the game away for Turner. For PC Metals, David Matthews had two hits, Ethan Carpenter collected a two-run single and Devin Luzietti banged out an RBI single. Austin Huffman and Andrew Pfeiffer also had key singles.

Rich’s Keys & Locks 6, Newtown Financial Mortgage 4 – Kyle McGrath singled, stole four bases, drove in two runs and scored four runs to lead Rich’s to the win. Zach Aumueller tripled in a pair of runs. Austin Martinez pitched well and Alex Daignault sparkled in the field. For NFM, Matt Elias and Curtis Williamson scored runs on by hits from Alex Klang and Albert Dean. David Anderson had another key hit.

U8

Fiorella Insurance 6, VFW Post (#308) 2 – Matthew Kugler, Austin Kasbarian and Aaron Gershon each earning multiple hits to lead Fiorella. Justin Oleberg, Peter Clifford and Joey Fiorella also contributed hits. For VFW, Clayton Schneider had three hits as Charles Soto, Jimmy Craig, Ryan Argraves, Philip Zuvanich had singles.

Raymond James Financial 8, Fiorella Insurance 2 – Justin Oleberg went 2-for-2 while Matthew Kugler hit a double to lead Fiorella in the loss. Justin Hull, Matthew Krasnickas and Aaron Gershon also had great at bats.

Flagpole Realty 2, Gas House Gorillas 1 – Austin Carfi and Robert Katrinak pitched well for Flagpole as Nick Brereton and Calvin Savoia shined in the field. Forrest Weatherby, Bobby Haskins, Paul Whitaker, Jack Moulder and Kieran Lynch had key hits for the Gorillas.

Onex 8, Flagpole Realty 7 – Jimmy Stiles caught a game-ending fly ball to stall a seven-run rally by Flagpole Reality in the top of the sixth inning to seal the victory for ONEX. Spencer Johnson and Zachary Laros played well on defense as well as Matthew Carino, Derek Streck and Eddie Henderson had two hits apiece and Nicholas Genovese belted a three-run homer to lead the offense. For Flagpole, Ethan Hoffman had three hits and scored three times  as Cooper Dilworth and Seth Williams had two hits each.

Onex 8, Addessi Jewelers 7 – ONEX scored four runs, led by Jeremy Spath, in the top of the sixth inning and held on to win the game. Scott Martin, Timothy LeBlanc and Daniel Pearson sparked the offense as Eddie Henderson anchored the defense.
