Youth Basketball: Eighth Grade Travel Team Trounces Fairfield
Boys 8th Travel
Newtown 51, Fairfield 36 â Newtown jumped out to a 16 to 5 first-quarter lead and sealed the win with aggressive defense and timely assists. Kyle Wilcox led Newtown with 19 points and Dan Gallegher dished out seven assists. Brendan DeAngelis chipped in with nine points and two steals. David Lucia and Erik Samuelson each had nine rebounds.

Boys 6th Travel
Greenwich 36, Newtown 34 â Jim Parker led Newtown with eight points (to go along with three steals) and Mike Davis chipped in seven points in a very close contest. Matt Mossbarger had five assists. Matt White and Nick Cagganello led a strong effort on the boards, grabbing six and five rebounds respectively.
Weston 59, Newtown 35 â Logan Puleri and Bubba Le Blanc each had seven points to lead Newtown in a loss to a very tough Weston squad. Mike Davis and Jonah Muniz had seven and four rebounds, respectively, while Matt Hoyt had four steals and Conner Gallagher added two.
Newtown 47, Ridgefield 45 (overtime) â Newtown beat its rival, Ridgefield, for a league win that was a total team effort. Bubba Le Blanc had 15 points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime on a nice feed from Jim Parker. In the overtime, Le Blanc again connected at the buzzer on an assist from Matt Mossbarger (his sixth assist of the game) to win the game for the locals. Logan Puleri contributed 12 points on very consistent shooting. Jonah Muniz led Newtown on the boards with seven rebounds, while Mike Davis had five steals. Conner Gallagher led a very consistent defensive effort.
Girls 6th Travel
New Canaan 20, Newtown Bounce 19 â Scoring only two points after a period and a half, the Bounce battled back to hold a one-point lead for the last quarter, losing only to a buzzer-beater at the end. Mary Jo Rossi lead with 5 points, followed by Jenny Indelicato with two key baskets. Kerry Scanlon and Tess Murray both contributed points, while Kristy Voswinkle and Jesse Principi were fierce stealers. Hope McMorran, Amanda Cirella, and Amanda Crowell were hot on defense, and Danielle Shine grabbed the most rebounds.
Redding 28, Newtown Bounce 19 â After a strong first half, Bounce scoring stalled, allowing Redding to get ahead. The loss was sealed by Reddingâs strong free throws. Danielle Shine and Kristy Voswinkel had six points each and Mary Jo Rossi popped in five. Amanda Crowell and Amanda Cirella both contributed two. Kerry Scanlon consistently came up with the steals and Jenny Indelicato maneuvered the ball well. Tess Murray showed tenacity under the basket, Jesse Principi was a strong guard, and Hope McMorran was solid as forward.
Junior Girls
Rebels 31, Suns 11 â Jessica Gibbons popped in 11 points and Christina Caporale punched in ten points and made five assists; defensive stars were Kaitlyn VosWinkel with five steals and Kirsten Lynch grabbing six rebounds. Stephanie Perotti of the Suns drove in four points. Helping out defensively were Allison Monaco with four rebounds and Tressa Scott who played well.
Knicks 32, Da Bears 31 â Kelly Gaston kicked it up, popping in 12 points, with three assists and five rebounds. Kelsey Packer made the winning shot with less than one minute to play. Clutch playing by Packer. Julia Trudell canned eight points for Da Bears. Good defensive play by Luiza Talleucucci with five steals and Ellyn Gordon and Caroline Kingsley with six rebounds each. It was a close game throughout.
Huskies 32, Liberty 31 â Kristiana Engler popped in ten and Liz Eiseman drove in eight. Liz Eiseman had a great game on both ends of the court, as did Alison Blue; the whole team played hard for the Huskiesâ first win. Libertyâs Emma Herring tossed in 12 points. Defensively, Courtney Escada and Amanda Stanton played well. This was a hard-fought game throughout, with the whole team working hard.
The Hawks 34, Mercury 24 â Keri Chernoff led The Hawks with 11 points, followed by Bianca Solano with eight points. Olivia Phenix was the spark plug on defense with six steals. Jane Sclafani went in for six points. Shradha Sahani grabbed six rebounds and Lauren Meyer, Catherine Lotrecciano, and Heather Leone played well defensively.
Junior Boys
Nets 51, Wildcats 43 â Austin Bonaddio popped in 19 points followed by Mike Mossberger with 13 points. Phil Reynolds stole four while Mason West and Brendan Cullary each had ten rebounds. Matthew Rahtelle made 13 points while Mario Pisaghelli threw in 11. Carlton Soota had nine points and Richard Greenwood had ten rebounds.
The Maulers 53, Tarheels 36 â Devillis led the game with 23 points and Villa popped in ten, with seven assists by Dylan Tambascio. Christian Mather stole five and Mac Morlock grabbed 12 rebounds. On the other end, Evan Noonan popped in 16 points and Mike Darbert dished off four assists. Don Morrisy played well with ten rebounds and Pat Riccardi with five steals.
Regulator 28, Sonics 27 â Greg Frattarolli and Jack Champage shared high scoring honors with six points each. James Mooney (4 steals) and Dan Bethke (4 rebounds) both played a good game defensively for the Regulators. Sean Ross popped in 12 points while Jack Kearney, Chase Hutchinson, and Kevin Dennis had solid performances.
Sonics 56, Pride 36 â Kevin Shpunt drove in 12 points. Joe Davis, Miles Loruglio, and Kevin Dennis were strong on defense to help with the win for the Sonics. Cooper was the high scorer for Pride, Wyatt Depuy was tough on defensive with four steals and added nine points, Harmeling dragged down six boards and Margules had seven.
Nighthawks 38, Gunners 31 â Michael Scharfenberg popped in 16 points. Pat Sullivan and Colin Morris scored six points each. Jon Hull and Ryan Palmer led the defense. The Gunners displayed compelling offensive and defensive on both ends of the court.
Bears 47, Vipers 41 â Alex Roche led with 22 points with four assists from Tim Eames. Keenan Mulligan (four steals) and Mike Greenwood dragged down eight rebounds to lead the Bears defensively. Dan Poetl poured in ten points and Richard Sandler pumped in nine. The team as a whole had a good floor game for the Vipers.
Avalanche 40, Nuggets 25 â Sean Burson popped in 16 points and Matt Shannon drove in ten. Great team win for the Avalanche with Jimmy Russo grabbing 14 rebounds and five steals each by Ben Steller and Eric Sutton. The Nuggetsâ Mike Lengel canned 12 points, Dave Cortisano and Will Carr played well.
Huskies 45, Statesmen 44 â Dom Fedak led the Huskies with 14 points and Ried Schmidt scored 11 points with eight assists from Jack McManus. Scott Runkle grabbed 11 rebounds. Chris Erikson of the Statesmen led the way with 16 points and Graham Derrickson added six. The team played well defensively with great blocks from Brian Kruger, four steals from Will Fletcher and five rebounds from Peter Kerns. Tremendous effort.

Intermediate Boys (5th)
Twisters 33, Super Sonic Pumpkins 28 â Tough game between these two unbeaten teams. High scorer was Kevin Overdorf with 12 points with help from Sawyer Conrad, while Mark Dowling lead with ten steals and Alex Klang rebounding. Jon Sherman poured in 13 points and Stephen Grasso pumped in nine points for the Super Sonic Pumpkins.
Bulldogs 29, Scorpions 12 â Max Rucinski popped in ten points and Adam Israel canned nine points. Carl Whippie grabbed four rebounds and Jason Ferrari grabbed eight. The team buckled down defensively in the second half. Scorpionsâ Colton Moroney brought in four and Nick Cirone brought in two with three assists from Joe Stromsky. Strong first quarter, good man-to-man defense. Strong rebounding by Trevor with five. Dave Corsi took 12 steals.
Wildcats 38, Celtics 36 â Peter Manfredonia and Patrick Berger teamed up for 22 points. Manfredonia also had nine rebounds. Baxter Hankin and Matt Hess added four points each as part of a very balanced team effort in this overtime thriller. C.J. Dunn of the Celtics popped in 14 points with five assists from Tommy Rahr. Andrew King had a great game on both sides of the ball, while Daniel Romeo was a great hustler.
Rockets 38, Heat 22 â Bob Archiere and James Burdette both knocked in 12 each, with four assists by Zachary Weiland, four steals from Brennan OâSullivan and ten rebounds from Eric Cascone. Heatâs Albert Dean scored ten points with four assists from Charlie Hueg. Arnav Singh grabbed four rebounds off the backboard and Rory Phillips stole two for Heat.
Intermediate Boys (6th)
Heat 22, Knicks 12 â Kaj Djonne with eight points, Connor LeMay with three assists, Colin Reilly with four steals and six rebounds by Mitchell Godin. Knicksâ Bryce Decker led the offensive with six points, Kenton McCleary with four assists, Nate Dowd with four steals, Harry Dupuy pulled down 12 rebounds.
Celtics 39, Free Agents 37 â Good game by all. Ben Payne popped in ten points, with six assists from Matt Wood. Working hard defensively, Jack Lango took four steals and Brendan Peterson and Ben Payne each grabbed eight rebounds. Chase Wurtz led the way with 17 points. Connor Noonan chipped in 11.
Hawks 41, Ball And One 34 â Matt Lindell led with 16 points, while pat Rowley assisted with four. Alex Romeo stole two and Virgil Procaccini ripped down a dozen rebounds. Pat Rowley and Andrew Derricksen had exceptional games. Kalra lead Ball And One with 12 points. Great game for Jordan Sock.
Huskies 41, Suns 20 â Tommy Gleason popped in 17 and Jacob Moore was a defensive standout with five assists. Patrick Afriyie clipped six steals. The Sunsâ Tim Kelly and Matt Janco led with 11 points each. Great defensive play on the floor from Tom Floros with two steals and three blocks and Chris George pulled down four rebounds.
Celtics 35, Rebels 23 â Stewart popped in eight points, assisted by Wood with six points. Lago had five steals and Payne had ten. Rickets had eight points, Rafferty with three assists, Buzzanca with four steals and 12 rebounds by Scarangella.
Nighthawks 34, Mavericks 26 â Michael Dinalli dropped in seven points assisted by Chris Carroll. Bohnton Scott led the team defensively. Linden scored eight points and Nick Strokis dished off five assists for the Mavericks. Wesley Morlock grabbed eight rebounds and Matt Baldino made four steals. The Mavericks fought their way back into the game in the fourth quarter with a great defensive press.
Midget Boys
Wildcats vs Purple People Eaters â Greg Trimarchi, Sean Wallace and Noah Schmidt led offensively while Ricky Mariani, and Rhett Saunders highlighted the defense of the Wildcats. Matt Guinee, Connor Barrett, and Adam Bergeron of the Purple People Eaters led the game with great defensive plays by Jack Lavell, Matt Gerbo, and Hans Sorensen.
Lakers vs Panthers â Playing a good offensive game were Colin McCafferty, Graham Dowd, and Josh Harper. Oliver Wood, Colin Villamana, and Tiernan Keane played good D for the Lakers. The Panthersâ River Low, Joshua Dunn, and Ryan Kost all drove it in offensively, while Justin Dunn, Bryce Griffin, and Drew Tienken played good defense.
Fireballs vs Goofy Goobers â Brian Kerins, Ryan Williams, and Austin Smith lit up the offense for the Fireballs, while Will Stenz, AJ Salaris and Ben Terry led the team on defense. Mitchell Savoca, Nathan Malota, and Kyle Roche powered the offense, while Henry Primavera and Quinlan Hart anchored the defense for the Goofy Goobers.
Blue Devils vs Orange Flames â Gavin Stubbs, Cole Demirjian, and Jacob Steinebrey led the Blue Devils offensively, while Jake Pirone, Matthew Auerbach, and Matt Frazzetta led the defense. The Orange Flames were led by Christopher Mok, Andrew Buzzi, and Robert Hutchins offensively, while Adam Wolff, Tim Cervera, and Braeden Mathieson played the courts well.
Hawks vs Red Devils â Offensively Scotty Bauer, Zach Demeglio, and Jack Dooley provided the highlights for the Hawks, while Doug Carriero, Nikhil Trivedi, and Mitchell Long led defensively. Leading the Red Devils offensively were Nicholas Weiland, Adam Manes, and Bradley Capeci. Nice game defensively from William LeMay, Harry Eppers, and Charles Romano.
Green Torpedos vs Celtics â Peter Fagerholm, Wesley Scriven, and Andrew Lee powered the offense, while Thomas Addessi, Joe Accousti, and Jordan Klein played well defensively for the Torpedos. Justin Woodard, Nicolas Madej, and Bobby Haskins highlighted the offense, while Noah LaFerriere, Connor DiNallo, and Jack Murray brought up the defense for the Celtics.
Sharks vs Green Goo â Thomas Cotton, Steven Moccio, and David Lawrence led offensively, while Tyler Trede, Zach Anderson, and Joey Conrod played well defensively for the Sharks. The Green Gooâs Riley Burns and Dylan Cortese played well offensively, while Thomas Coppinger and Shane Maksel played a good defensive game.
White Knights vs Yellow Sabers â Aidan Ford, Owen McInerney, and Matt Principi played well offensively, while Michael Liberante, Nate Jones, and Ryan Escoda played a good game defensively for the White Knights. The Yellow Sabersâ William Gottschalck, Joey Cistulli, and David Kohler drove it in offensively, while John Dwyer Grimes, Michael Wheeler, and David Grossman defended the court well.
Hawks vs Purple People Eaters â Scotty Bauer, Jack Dooley, and Tommy Kitzmiller hooked up the offense, while Owen Rahr, Nikhil Trivedi, and Tim Jaeger played well defensively for the Hawks. Peter Clifford, Robert Murray, and Jack Palermo played well offensively, while Ethan Aug and Ian Klepacki were a force defensively for the Purple People Eaters.
Fireballs vs Orange Flames â Brian Kerins, AJ Salaris, and Bryan Morrissey played well offensively, while Ryan Williams, Austin Smith, and Anthony Isabella fought for the defense for the Fireballs. The Orange Flamesâ Christopher Mok, Robert Hutchins, and Taylor Koonz took it in offensively, while Scott Pressler, Tim Cervera, and Braeden Matheison defended well.
Celtics vs Lakers â Noah LaFerriere, Jack Moulder, and Matthew Kretz played well offensively, while Nicolas Madej, Jack Murray, and Austin Kasbarian led the Celtics defensively. Christopher Daubert, Graham Dowd, and Nicholas Harper played well offensively. Colin McCafferty, Tiernan Keane, and Adam Farley drove it defensively for the Lakers.
White Knights vs Wildcats â Austin Engler, Owen McInerney, and Michael Liberante starred offensively while Nate Jones and Matt Principi led defensively for the White Knights. Jake Holman, Will Corbett, and Sean Wallace led offensively for the Wildcats, while Greg Trimarchi, Brooks Petershack, and Christian Adam led defensively.

Bumblebees vs Red Devils â Lauren Villamana, Jessica Maturo, Natalie Shaler, and Jennifer Uhl drove it in for the Bumblebees and Abby Pearson, Erin Tressler, Stephanie Edwards, and Caroline Caporale powered the Red Devils
Orange Crush vs Huskies â Madelyn Meier, Katie McCabe, Danielle Powell, and Kira Smith played well for the Orange Crush, while Chloe Kasak, Lexy Leidlein, Lindsy Tienken, and Rachel Sherwood anchored the Huskies.

Lightening 16, Eagles 16 â The Lightening was led offensively by Dylan Tyrell and Christion Thanasoulis, while defensively they were led by Jackson Cryder and Colin Patrick. The Eagles were led offensively by Jeremy Salaris and Sean McCarthy, while defensively they were led by Trevor Gaines and Tom Elliot.
Blue Devils 20, Huskies 12 â The Blue Devils were led offensively by Devin Petersen and Kyle Keeping, while defensively they were led by John Cagganello and Markus Wessel. The Huskies were led offensively by Nick Bourgeois and Connor Flint, and defensively led by Nathan Wutzke and Matt Stewart.
Big Red Machine 16, Nighthawks 13 â The BRM was led offensively by Nick Rohrbacher and Liam Palilla, while defensively they were led by Maxime Donaher and Matt Ingwersen. The Nighthawks were led offensively by Austin LeBlanc and Andrey Masser, while defensively they were led by Riley Young and Chris Buckley.

Orangemen 11, Celtics 7 â The Orangemen were led offensively by Dillon Palumbo and Jake Oliger, while defensively they were led by Cole Terry and Brandon Johnson. The Celtics were led offensively by Sam Czel and David Anderson, while defensively they were led by Stephen Brittin and Jaxson Mills.
Bantam Girls
Eagles 17, Devils 13 â Jessica Shairer and Britney Antous highlighted the offense while Chrissy Moore and Joanna Vadola drove it in for the defense for the Eagles. The Devils were led by Jillian Gibney and Amanda Albanesi and defensively by Abby Kohler and Victorian Kirkman.
Tigers 22, Yellow Bees 8 â Tigers led the way offensively with Julia Wiberg, Haley Williams. Molly Begg and Clare Boyle led the team defensively. The Yellow Bees had a fine game with Caitlin Linden, Sarah Bender, Madison Pirone, and Alexis Tucker leading the way.
No Names 16, Wildcats 16 â Both teams were equally strong with CC DelRossi and Emma Horne playing well offensively and Kayla Hordish and Rachel Williams leading the defense for No Names, while Alana OâDonnell of the Wildcats stepped it up offensively, while Courtney Demeglio and Steph Carr played well on the defensive side of the ball.
