The Newtown Soccer Club will be hosting a Major League Soccer Youth Skills competition as part of the MLS New York Life Dribble, Pass & Shoot program on Sunday, May 28, at Newtown High School.
The event is free to all boys and girls ages 6-14and all participants will receive a certificate of completion and a voucher for a free ticket to any 2000 MetroStars regular season home game. More than 110,000 athletes nationwide participated in the program in its second year in 1999. It provides an opportunity for youngsters to compete in a fun, free competition featuring three essential skills of soccer: dribbling, passing and shooting.
Each contestant will have one attempt to dribble through a slalom course of flags for speed, three attempts at passing the ball through a line of flags for accuracy and three shots at a regulation-sized goal with a target net. Points scored from all three events are added for the cumulative total.
The program is structured with four different levels of competition. Everyone begins by competing at the âLocalâ level. First-place finishers in the oldest three age divisions move on to the âSectionalâ competition. The top four scorers out of the first-place winners from the Sectionals will advance to the MetroStars âTeam Championship,â scheduled for Wednesday, August 23rd at Giants Stadium surrounding the MetroStars vs. Kansas City MLS match.
The top four scorers nationally in each division from the Team Championships will then earn the right to compete for the National Championship at the National Finals to be held at MLS Cup 2000 in October.
