Big Y Scholarships

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. — Big Y Foods, Inc., has announced that applications are now available for the more than 200 scholarships to be awarded in Spring 2001. A total of over $150,000 worth of college scholarships will be awarded for the 2001/2002 academic year. Students will be awarded scholarships for being the most academically outstanding applicants, regardless of financial need. Applications are available at all Big Y’s 46 locations, or by visiting their Web site at bigy.com. Completed applications must be submitted by February 1, 2001.

This year, a new sub-category has been added to the Big Y Scholarship program to honor the police officers and firefighters that risk their lives every day to protect and serve every community. Eight scholarships totaling $6,000 will be awarded to dependents of police officers and firefighters in Big Y’s market area.

Awards are given to the most academically outstanding high school, community college, undergraduate, graduate, and non-traditional students in the Big Y market area. A certain number of these awards are also designated for Big Y employees and their dependents, and the new sub-category, dependents of police officers and firefighters. To be eligible, a student’s permanent residence or school must be located within Western and Central Massachusetts or the State of Connecticut.
