âWARHOLâS MUNCHSâ AT 1018 ART SEPT 7
avv/gs set 8/22 #709908
NEW YORK CITY â The exhibition âWarholâs Munchsâ is on view at 1018 Art, September 7âNovember 3. An opening reception will be September 6, from 6 to 8 pm.
Completed in 1984 and drawn from Edvard Munchâs most noted paintings and related graphic works, Warholâs âAfter Munchâ series comprises three main images, âThe Scream,â âEva Mudocciâ and âSelf-Portrait with Skeletal Arm and Madonna.â
Five silkscreen paintings were executed of each tile, totaling 15 paintings that are part of a large body of work, including an edition of prints and drawings. This exhibition marks the first time a selection of works from this series will be formally shown together.
The âAfter Munchâ series addresses Warholâs use and appropriation of works central to the canon of Western art and underscores the artistâs career-long preoccupation with cultural icons drawn from throughout the history of art from da Vinci and de Chirico to Picasso.
Warholâs artistic career took off in the early 1960s with works such as âCampbellâs Soup Can,â âMarilyn,â âElvisâ and the âCoca Colaâ series. In 1963, he created his first painting based on another artistsâ work, âMona Lisa Thirty Are Better Than One,â but he would wait until the 1980s before further exploiting the use of icons originally created by other artists.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog. The gallery is at 1018 Madison Avenue, third floor. For information, 212-537-0453.
