Rear End Bump

State Police said on September 15, a 2000 Toyota Camry hit an unidentified tractor trailer which was traveling west near Exit 9 adjacent to the Tunnel Road overpass on I-84 at approximately 8:30 pm. According to the report, the operator, Colburn Atkinson, 22, of Brewster, N.Y., incurred visible damage to its front end, while the truck continued on without stopping. Mr Atkinson was cited for traveling too close and traveling too fast for conditions. The truck was never located.

Erratic Operation

Newtown Police reported that on September 16 at about 9:31 pm, officers were dispatched to the area of 26 South Main Street to investigate an erratic operator. They identified the vehicle in question, and after an investigation, charged the driver Thomas Gallagher, 48, of Dorman Lane, Oxford, on multiple counts including failure to drive right, DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of less than four ounces of marijuana.

Outstanding Warrant

At 7:55 am on September 16, Newtown police were called to New Haven to pick up a Sandy Hook resident who was apprehended by Southern Connecticut State University Police on an outstanding warrant. Richard Temple, 19, of Maple Street was charged with failure to respond to an infraction and possession of alcohol by a minor, resulting from a previous incident. Mr Temple was released later on a $136 cash bond pending an October 4 court appearance.

Ambulance Damaged

A Newtown ambulance was damaged slightly in a single vehicle incident September 17 at approximately 2:42 am local police said. According to the report, volunteer Stuart Rieve of Plumtrees Road was driving the town’s 2003 Ford Econoline ambulance southbound on Mile Hill Road at Cochran Road South when the right tires veered onto the soft shoulder. The report states the momentum pulled the vehicle further off the road, hitting a tree as it came to a stop, causing damage to the right mirror and the carrying compartment of the vehicle. After a brief investigation, Rieve was cited for making a restricted turn.

Refuse Truck Hit

On September 12, Newtown police reported Robert Petty, 23, of Philo Curtiss Road, Sandy Hook was issued a written warning for following too close after coming in contact with a Shelton-based refuse carrier. The report states Petty was traveling south on South Main Street in a 1999 Ford Super Duty truck at about 6:43 am, and failed to stop when a 1998 International refuse truck began slowing to make a pickup. The crash resulted in minor damage to the Ford, and no reported injuries.

On Ramp Crash

Newtown police said a Danbury woman was cited for failure to grant the right of way at an intersection after colliding with a Sandy Hook driver who was lawfully entering I-84 at Wasserman Way September 6 at 3:32 pm. The report states that Neusa Moriera, 41, of Sheridan Street, Danbury, was attempting to turn left to enter the ramp in her 2004 Saturn Ion when she came in contact with a 1997 Nissan Sentra sedan whose operator had the right of way on a right turn onto the same on ramp. No injuries were reported.

High School Fight

Two 15-year-old juveniles were charged with third degree assault at approximately 11:39 am September 18 after a reported fist fight at Newtown High School. While police cannot release the names of the students, an officer said the altercation resulted in slight injuries to both of the youths involved. Both individuals were released into the custody of their parents pending court appearances October 1.

Assault Arrest

At approximately 7:20 pm September 18, Newtown police charged resident Lara Kohutka, 36, of Dusty Lane with assault in the third degree and disorderly conduct. According to the report, the accused was facing an active warrant following an incident between herself, and another man and woman at the residence August 6. Kohutka posted a $500 bond pending an October 2 court appearance, and was subsequently released.

Flagpole Crash

Newtown police reported a motor vehicle crash at the Main Street Church Hill Road intersection September 11 at approximately 2:06 pm, which resulted in a charge of making a restricted turn being filed against a 16-year-old who resides on Palestine Road. Police say that driver was operating a 1999 Chevrolet station wagon when he reportedly attempted to turn northbound on Main Street from Church Hill Road. His vehicle was struck by a northbound 1997 Nissan King Cab pickup being driven by a Danbury resident, causing damage to the Chevrolet’s driver side door and the front end of the Nissan. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and no injuries were reported.

Cherokee Vs Honda

According to Newtown police, on September 12 at about 2:18 pm, Mark Lawrence, 39, of Saddle Ridge Lane, Southbury, was operating a 2006 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Church Hill Road, when he came into contact with the rear of a 2005 Honda station wagon being driven by a Golden Pond Road resident. The Honda reportedly had slowed to turn into 46 Church Hill Road when the crash occurred. Mr Lawrence was cited for following too close. No injuries were reported.

Vandals Sought

Newtown police are continuing to seek information on spray paint vandalism that occurred in the Treadwell Park pavilion sometime between 8 am and 5 pm on August 27. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 426-5841. All calls are kept confidential.

Refused Treatment

Police say a Prospect resident who was injured in a moderate two-car collision September 13 at about 6:08 pm on Toddy Hill Road, refused medical attention for a cut from an airbag. According to the report, Marta Kaufman, 40, of Alsace Street, Bridgeport, was operating a 2002 Saturn L100 on Toddy Hill Road when she crossed the center line and collided with the operator of a 2005 Honda CRV. Both cars were towed from the scene.

Heroin Found

Police responding to a reported motor vehicle accident at about 5:51 pm September 16 on Pootatuck Park Road, instead found Michael Robson, 35 of Oakville parked and reportedly under the influence of narcotics. After a brief investigation during which police say they located heroin in the vehicle, the individual was charged with operating under the influence, operating without a license, improper parking, operating with insufficient insurance, possession of narcotics (heroin), and possession of drug paraphernalia. After processing Mr Robson was released on a $200 cash bond pending an October 2 court date.

Multiple Charges

Police say on September 16 at about 8:08 pm, William Lemus-Chacon, 28 of Orchard Street Bridgeport, was pulled over after an officer noticed the vehicle lacked a front marker plate. Upon further investigation, numerous other charges were filed on the individual including misuse of a marker plate, failure to display plates, operating an unregistered vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and operating with insufficient insurance. The accused was processed and released on a $32 cash bond pending an October 2 court date.

Failed To Respond

On September 18, police say they took a Newtown man into custody for failure to respond to an infraction. Verstegen Collins, 43, of South Main Street was originally charged with the illegal sale of tobacco to a minor during a recent sting operation targeting numerous local businesses. He was released on a $200 bond pending an October 3 court date. Two days earlier, police arrested a Sandy Hook resident on charges of failure to respond to a charge of possession of alcohol by a minor. In that case, police charged Richard Temple, 19 with failure to respond, as well as the alcohol possession count. Mr Temple posted a $136 bond and was scheduled to appear in court October 4.

Road Rage

According to police, a September 13 road rage incident on Queen Street resulted in the arrest of Justin McGreen, 21, of Hawthorne Hill Road. The accused is facing a charge of assault in the third degree after reportedly striking another individual in the face. After processing, Mr McGreen was released on a written promise to appear in court September 27.
