Youth Arrested On Drug/Alcohol Charges

Police report that during a sobriety checkpoint, which they conducted on the night of December 17, and early morning hours of December 18, they arrested a youth under age 18 on multiple charges including drug and alcohol offenses.

Police staged the checkpoint from 8 pm to 4 am on the section of Wasserman Way near its intersection with Trades Lane at Fairfield Hills.

Police said that during the enforcement event, they stopped the youth, investigated, and then charged the youth with possession of marijuana, possession of alcohol by a minor, making an improper turn, violation of  the curfew for new drivers, and violation of passenger restrictions for new drivers.

Police took the youth into custody for booking, after which the youth was released for an upcoming court appearance. Because the arrested youth is under age 18, his/her identity is shielded from disclosure by state law.

Police at the checkpoint also issued multiple warnings to many drivers for various motor vehicle violations.

All motorists driving in both directions are stopped at such checkpoints and briefly interviewed to detect those who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Police conduct the checkpoints to reduce the number of alcohol/drug-related motor vehicle accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Grant funds provided by the Federal Highway Safety Program cover 75 percent of the police overtime costs stemming from sobriety checkpoints.
