Police Department Wins

Traffic Safety Award 

The Newtown Police Department has won an award in the Connecticut Law Enforcement Challenge, a traffic safety competition sponsored by the state Department of Transportation’s highway safety division and the Connecticut Chiefs of Police Association.

The Newtown Police Department won a third-place award in its municipality size category. Accepting the award were police Captain Joe Rios and Sergeant Darlene Froehlich at recent ceremonies held at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.

The Berlin and Farmington police departments won the first and second place awards in the municipality size category in which Newtown competed.

The competition focuses on three traffic safety priorities: vehicle occupant protection, DUI enforcement, and speed enforcement.

Sgt Froehlich prepared the application for the competition, which focused on traffic safety education, traffic engineering, and traffic enforcement. The police department received a plaque symbolizing its traffic safety award.

The traffic safety program is designed to reduce vehicular injuries, save lives, and detect and deter crime.
