Yale Guild Announces 2001 Carillonneurs Concert Series

NEW HAVEN — The Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs has unveiled its 2001 summer concert series, an annual event inviting renowned carillonneurs from around the world to perform for Yale and the surrounding community.

All concerts begin at 7 pm. This year’s concert schedule is as follows: July 6, Robin Austin, Carillonneur, Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.; July 13, Judson Maynard, Denton, Texas; July 20, Peter Bremer, Universiteit Twente, The Netherlands; July 27, Helen Hawley, Kansas; August 3, Roy Lee, New Haven; August 10, Dan Kehoe, Trinity College, Hartford; and August 17, Ellen Espenschied, New Haven.

Concerts are free, open to the public, and last approximately one hour. The carillon is best heard within Branford College, on High Street between Chapel and Elm. Seating is not provided; audience members are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

In the event of rain, an indoor listening space will be provided.

The Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs is a group of approximately 20 students who play the Yale Memorial Carillon in Harkness Tower, an instrument of 54 bells ranging in weight from 23 pounds to seven tons. The bells are rung daily from 12:30 to 1 and from 5 to 5:30 pm during the academic year.

The group operates as a guild, annually inviting freshmen and sophomores to participate in a semester-long training process, followed by a set of competitive auditions which culminate in the selection of several new members. In addition to playing at Yale, the guild makes annual tours of carillons in Belgium, Holland, Canada and the United States.
