Harmon S. Strauss

Harmon S. Strauss, 89, of 49 Dodgingtown Road, Newtown, died October 9 at his home with his wife, Susan (Bryan) Strauss at his bedside.

He was born in Derby, attended Bridgeport High School and graduated from Phillips Exeter academy. He graduated from Yale University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1931. He attended Yale School of Drama for three years, majoring in playwriting.

After graduating from Navy Officer Candidate School in World War II, he was assigned to the USS Sway, a minesweeper, as commanding officer, serving in the Mediterranean.

After the war he lived in New Hampshire with his wife, Susan, and son, Harry, where he did some freelance writing. After several years in New Hampshire, he returned to New York City, where he became director of the News Policy Staff at Radio Free Europe.

After many years in New York, he returned to Connecticut and joined the staff of Famous Writers School in Westport, as an instructor of writing.

He retired in 1978 and moved to Newtown.

In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by one brother, Culbert Strauss, of Easton.
