CL&P, Yankee Gas Urge Customers

To Be Wary Of Imposters

BERLIN — Customers of The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P) and Yankee Gas Services Company (Yankee Gas) are asked to be wary of people who may telephone or come to their home and claim they are “from the electric company” or “from the gas company.” The reminder comes after CL&P received at least one report of a customer who was contacted and told that the caller was from CL&P and needed to enter the home “to monitor electric usage.” The caller was not, in fact, a CL&P employee.

CL&P and Yankee Gas remind customers that all CL&P and Yankee Gas employees carry company-issued photo identification cards. Before allowing someone claiming to be a CL&P or Yankee Gas employee into your home or business, insist on seeing their identification cards.

CL&P representatives do not typically enter a customer’s home, as CL&P electrical work is usually done outside a home or business, unless the electric meter is located indoors.

Yankee Gas employees wear company-issued uniforms and may have to enter a customer’s home or business to address a service issue. If customers receive a phone call from someone claiming to represent either CL&P or Yankee Gas, they should question the caller to find out more information. Customers are also advised that if anyone comes to their home to sell them any service or to perform any service work, they should always ask to see identification.

Customers who still have doubts about the authenticity of a phone call or visit they receive from a person claiming to be a representative of CL&P or Yankee Gas should call the appropriate customer service number immediately and ask the customer service representative to verify the call or visit. For CL&P call 800-286-2000, and for Yankee Gas call 800-989-0900.
