AVV 6-13 #742651
WASHINGTON, D.C. â âTales of the Brush Continued: Chinese Paintings with Literary Themesâ is on view at the Freer Gallery of Art through July 27.
From the ancient times to the present day, Chinese artists have always turned to literature for inspiration for their paintings and works of calligraphy, and other objects. By creating a close correlation between image and text, artists over the centuries have depicted famous mythical scenes, illustrated significant events in Chinese history, and interpreted beloved poems and stories.
Among the major literary themes on view are the mythical âNymph of the Luo River,â the historical tale of âLady Cai Wenji Returns to Han,â the legendary âFemale Immortal Chang Eâ and the poetic âThoughts on Ancient Sites by Du Fu.â
The Freer Gallery of Art is at 12th Street and Independence Avenue, SW, on the National Mall. For more information, www.asia.si.edu or 202-633-1000.
