Complaint Filed Over Access To Voter Registration
Newtown resident Wendy Beres has filed a formal complaint and grievance against the town for not providing a special registration of voters available to persons with disabilities.
Also, she has re-stated her grievance regarding poor handicap accessibility at the Middle School voting place. In particular, she said, one handicap parking space was not placed closest to a curb cut and the crosswalk was in such disrepair as to cause injury.
âIâd like to see them provide a reasonable place to register to vote. Edmond Town Hall has a handicap assistance policy in place, but it is only in affect on weekdays. The Registrars of Voters have special Saturday and evenings, which are not covered,â she said.
The registrars have offered to register voters in the parking lot â a plan Mrs Beres called rude.
âTheyâve been told. Theyâve been notified. They have a disabilities committee at their access, and no one had the thoughtfulness to actually write a memo to themselves that accessibility is an issue,â Mrs Beres said.
Mrs Beresâ grievance was sent to the townâs chief building inspector, who also serves as the townâs ADA coordinator.
