Campus Sports Notes

Newtown residents are making the collegiate athletics news with their efforts this fall. Some of the highlights as provided to The Bee are as follows (please send your college notes to andyh@thebee.com):

Canavan: University of Connecticut lacrosse player Kevin Canavan was named PCLL Rookie of the Year and Five Huskies were named to the 2011 Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League All-Conference Team. Canavan was also named to the First Team as a midfielder. Canavan is the program’s all-time leader in points per game, goals in a season, points in a season, and points per game in a season.

Bowen: The Manhattan College softball team, including Katie Bowen, has been recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a Division I All-Academic Team. The Jaspers had a team GPA of 3.410 in the 2010-11 academic year, which ranked 14th among all Division I programs. In addition, nine Manhattan student-athletes were named All-America Scholar Athletes by the NFCA.

Hoyt: Keane State University senior Kevin Hoyt was the first Owl to finish, placing 61st and covering the 4.95 mile course in a time of 26:03 at the New England Championships at Boston’s Franklin Park on October 8.
