Garden Conservancy Offers Fellowship
COLD SPRING, N.Y. â The Garden Conservancy, a nonprofit organization devoted to preserving exceptional gardens, is now accepting applications for its sixth annual fellowship, the Marco Polo Stufano Garden Conservancy Fellowship.
The 2004 Fellowship offers the chance to gain practical experience in horticulture, organizational development, and preservation planning by working with staff and volunteers at two Garden Conservancy projects ââ The Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills, N.J., and Montrose Gardens in Hillsborough, N.C.
The fellow will spend the first three months of the Fellowship at Greenwood Gardens assisting with planning for the extensive restoration and development of this historic landscape as a public garden. Following a spring stay at Montrose, the fellow will return to Greenwood to participate in an exciting restoration project.
While at Montrose, from April through June, the fellow will learn how to manage a garden through the change of seasons and will help with the transition of the spring garden to its summer display under the direction of accomplished horticulturist and gardener, Nancy Goodwin.
The 2004 Fellowship is a nine-month assignment beginning in January 2004. The application deadline is September 30, 2003, and candidate interviews will be conducted in early November. It includes a stipend of $24,000 and some benefits.
Candidates should have a bachelorâs degree in horticulture or a related subject or sufficient relevant practical experience. At least five yearsâ experience is preferred. Applications from individuals who have demonstrated success in other fields and are establishing themselves in horticulture, landscape preservation, and garden management are welcome.
Established in 1999, the fellowship program has provided invaluable hands-on experience while contributing to successful preservation efforts at gardens in Texas, New Hampshire, California, Washington State, and New Jersey.
