12/28 TEXTILE SOCIETY ANNOUNCES FALL SYMPOSIUM IN HAWAII, 1 CUT

AVV 12-12 #722312

HONOLULU, HAWAII — The 11th Textile Society of America biennial symposium, “Textiles as Cultural Expressions,” is planned for September 24–27 at the Sheraton Waikiki here. The symposium is open to the public as well as to society members.

The international symposium is expected to attract textile collectors, curators, students, educators, scholars and experts from around the world as well as highlight Hawaii’s own esteemed museum and private collections and knowledgeable curators.

The symposium will also include site seminars at museums and at special exhibitions that will feature the fine collections and resources of Hawaii on Friday, September 26, from 2 to 4:30 pm, according to Tom Klobe, director emeritus of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery and TSA symposium co-coordinator.

These seminars will allow symposium attendees behind-the-scenes access to textiles and their stories. Bus transportation to the museums and exhibitions sites will be provided. Space is limited, registration must include first, second and third seminar choices.

The seminars include Restoring the Grandeur of King Kalakaua’s and Queen Liliuokalani’s Iolani Palace, Presenting Culturally Sensitive Exhibitions, Traditional Art Forms in Hawaii, Hawaiian Quilting: An Evolving Cultural Tradition, Plantation Era and Twentieth Century Textiles in Hawaii, Spirited Textiles of Japan: From Country Casual to Urban Chic, Chinese Opera and Southwest Chinese Minority Costumes, Textiles from the Malay Archipelago and New Guinea, and Islamic Textiles.

At the Academy Art Center, “Tattered Cultures,” an invitational contemporary fiber art exhibition, will feature works by international fiber artists who are TSA members, exploring how dominant ideologies of a specific time and place tatter the cultural heritage of the less-dominant and culturally diverse.

The symposium will also feature a two-day International Textile Marketplace at the Sheraton Waikiki with an array of specialty textile products including books, textile conservation products, wearable art and one-of-a-kind textile collectibles.
