Every Wednesday you will receive an email with a list of the library’s most recent purchases in a variety of categories.

*The Playaways are Here: Booth Library has purchased 5o book titles on the new playaway format.

It’s a player! It’s an audiobook!  It’s the all-in-one playaway!  Small, convenient and portable, the playaway is the perfect size to take anywhere you want to listen to a great story.

Check out the new collection at the adult circulation desk.

Children’s Programs

*Story Hour Registration: Registration for preschool story times will begin August 21 and end on September 3. 

Participants must be a resident of Newtown and register in person at the children’s desk.  No phone registrations will be accepted.

The following is a list of the available class times:  12-24 months will meet Thursday at 10 am; 2-3 year olds – Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at 10, or Monday, Thursday or Saturday at  11 am; 4-5 year olds – Tuesday at 11 or Wednesday or Thursday at 1 pm.

Classes meet once weekly for six weeks beginning the week of September 8 and ending the week of October 13.

*Summer Reading Statistics: The C.H. Booth Library summer reading program ended on August 16.

Fifty young adult volunteers donated 687 hours of their time this summer listening to readers report on the books they were reading. Summer Reading participants read a total of 7,340 books this year! Everyone who read books over the summer should be proud of their efforts.

Raffle winners have been notified by phone. If you won a prize, please stop in to the children’s department to claim it as soon as possible.  Congratulations to everyone who won raffle prizes, and thank you to everyone who participated in Summer Reading 2008.

*Last Week for Quick Picks.

The Summer Quick Picks collection will cease and desist when school resumes. Follow the arrows to find them in the special display with the red stickers in the YA area.

There’s mystery, fantasy, horror, biography, audiobooks and more for your last-minute summer reading and listening pleasure. There is even a special rack of extra quick reads if you’re short on time.

Family Programs

*September Book Talks: Book discussions for many groups will resume in September. Multiple copies of featured books are available at the circulation desk, and everyone is welcome to join the talks.

The Daytime Book Group will discuss The Shipping News by Annie Proulx on Monday, September 8, at 1 pm; Nonfiction Book Group will discuss Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year in the Life of Food by Barbara Kingsolver on Tuesday, September 9, at 1 pm; and then an Evening Book Discussion will concern Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin on Thursday, September 18, at 7:30 pm.

*Long Term Care seminar: Thursday, September 11, at 7 pm.

Marcia Bernstein, a licensed insurance producer who specializes in helping people of all ages understand their options and strategies in planning for long term care, will present the free program. Learn how you can protect your assets while remaining Medicaid eligible.

*Selling on eBay: Wednesday, September 24, at 1 or 7 pm.

Start earning the eBay way. Come learn how with eBay educational specialist Kerri Cartelli. The Sandy Hook resident will give an overview on how to sell, set up your seller account, and receive payments through PayPal. There is a gold mine in your attic.

C.H. Booth Library is open Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am to 8 pm; Friday from 11 am to 5 pm; Saturday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; and Sunday from noon to 5 pm (closed Sundays in July and August).
