Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*ANNUAL FLU SHOTS will be available on Tuesdays, October 20, and 27, from 9 to 11 am. No appointment is necessary. Bring Medicare card. Pneumonia shot also available.

*MOVIES on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm will not be shown for the rest of October because of the preparation for the Harvest Bazaar.

*Annual HARVEST BAZAAR will be Friday, October 23, 9 am to 4:30 pm, Saturday, October 24, 9 am to 3 pm, and Sunday, October 25, 9 am to noon. Contact Marilyn at 270-4310 to contribute in making items or baking for bake sale.

*There will not be any activities on Thursday and Friday, October 22 and 23, and Monday, October 26 because of the ongoing Harvest Bazaar.

Day Trips

*Enjoy an OKTOBERFEST celebration at Platzl Brauhaus, Pomona, N.Y., which has been changed to Tuesday, October 27, with a family-style dinner, beer, soda or apple cider and dancing and singing along with the German band and dancers. Depart 8:30 am; cost is $80

*On Monday, November 9, is a bus trip to MOHEGAN SUN, which is leaving at 8 am.

Overnight Trips

*UPCOMING TRIPS: Las Vegas on October 26–30 at Flamingo Hilton or Harrah’s, cost is $729, $100 deposit due upon signup. More information can be obtained at the center.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*SCRAPBOOKING every Tuesday at 10 am.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am with Mary Matern.

*Iris card folding CRAFT CLASS every Thursday at 2 pm.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, movie.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, exercise class, PM Ecumenical Bible study group, knitting, movie.

 

Menu For Week Of

October 19–23

Monday: Glazed ham, scalloped potato, peas and onions, seedless rye bread, pineapple juice, cinnamon applesauce.

Tuesday: Stuffed pepper, egg noodles, diced carrots, dinner roll, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Chicken stew served over rice, chopped spinach, buttermilk biscuit, apricot halves.

Thursday: Yankee pot roast with gravy, mashed potato, Scandinavian blend vegetables, wheat bread, birthday cake.

And for planning ahead —

Monday: October 26: Beef stroganoff served over egg noodles, diced squash, pumpernickel bread, pound cake.

Tuesday: October 27: Caribbean chicken, rice and beans, chopped spinach, buttermilk biscuit, mixed fruit juice, pineapple tidbits.
