Treadwell Park Playgrounds Near Completion
The Newtown Lions Club and the Treadwell Park Committee have announced that the goal has almost been reached to pay for the new, larger playground for children ages 5 through 12 at Treadwell Park.
A playground for children ages 2 through 5 was constructed earlier in the summer and was extensively used by children during July and August. It is estimated that approximately $7,000 is left to be raised, which will complete the development of both playgrounds.
âAlthough we hope to get several items volunteered, money is still needed to purchase lighting, security systems, benches and surfacing for the second playground as well as signs for both playgrounds,â said Tammy Marks, a co-chairman of the project.
Volunteers are needed to help assemble the two landscape structures from E.M. OâBrien. Tentative dates for construction are the weekends of Saturday and Sunday, October 27-28, and Saturday and Sunday, November 3-4. Peter Wallace, a local representative of E.M. OâBrien, as well as company construction experts will be on hand each day to direct the operations. However, volunteer help is greatly needed.
âWe need approximately 20 able-bodied men and women for the first Saturday and then approximately 30 people for the other three days,â said Gordon Williams, another co-chairman of the project.
âPeople are also needed to coordinate lunches, coffee and snacks for the four days,â Mrs Marks added. âRestaurants may be very willing to provide help supplying food. Babysitters area also in demand to provide assistance so that parents of young children will be able to volunteer.â
The two organizations hope that after four days of construction, children throughout the community will enjoy them.
âAll in all, we hope at the end of these four days we have a spanking new beautiful playground that the kids of Newtown will use for many years,â Mr Williams said. âThe good people who donated their time and money should have great satisfaction in what they did as well as the completion of the project.â
Anyone wishing to contribute to complete the playground project may write checks to the Treadwell Playground account and send them to Newtown Savings Bank or Newtown Parks and Recreation. For additional information or to volunteer call Gordon Williams at 426-6443 or Tammy Marks at 426-5333.
