Rotary Contributes To Labor Day Parade

Newtown Rotary is a big supporter of the Labor Day Parade and to show their support a check for $1,200 was presented to Nancy Koch, representing the Parade Committee. Larry Nkabinde, Rotary president-elect, presented the check.

The club was one of the original planners for the first parade held about 1969 and every year its members participate with a display/float in the line of march, the selling of hotdogs and refreshments at the corner of Routes 302 and 25, selling donuts and coffee at the parade staging area and along the parade route, and furnishing portable toilets along the parade route for many years. Proceeds of the food sales goes toward the following year’s parade goal.

This year, Newtown Rotary, together with Rotary Clubs throughout the world, has committed to helping to support the last efforts to eliminate polio from the face of earth by the year 2005, the 100th anniversary of the forming of the Rotary organization. The club has committed to raising $9,000 and is in the final weeks of its raffle for a Harvey Davidson motorcycle, proceeds being dedicated to this achieve this commitment. The motorcycle will be on display during the parade and the winning ticket will be drawn at The Pleasance, the park next to the police station on Main Street, immediately following the parade.

Only 500 tickets will be sold. The value of this special 100th Anniversary Edition is $25,000. Anyone interested in obtaining a ticket should call Ken Cohen, 270-9760, or Bill Wiemels, 270-4830. Any money raised above the club’s commitment to the Polio Plus campaign will be donated to the newly opened Kevin’s Community Center whose mission is to provide free primary care services for Newtown adult residents who are uninsured and low income.

Rotary meetings are held every Monday at 6 pm at the Fireside Inn on South Main Street. Anyone interested in helping to improve life in the community of Newtown and the world is welcome to attend one of the dinner meetings.
