Celiac Walkathon Set For May 15

NORTH Haven — Connecticut will have its first celiac disease walkathon beginning at 10 am on Saturday, May 15, at Wharton Brook State Park.

In addition to the walk there will be a picnic, raffle, games and activities, and T-shirts for the first 350 registered walkers.

Celiac disease is a condition that affects one in every 133 people. People with celiac are unable to digest gluten, which is the protein in wheat, barley, rye, and oats. This condition often is not diagnosed, and can lead to secondary illnesses.

The walk is being held to raise funds for, and promote awareness of, celiac disease. Sarah Jay, managing editor at Fine Cooking magazine, produced by Taunton Press in Newtown, will be walking in support of her niece and nephew, both of whom have celiac.

Major sponsors of the walk include actor Paul Newman, Stop & Shop supermarkets, and The Gluten Free Pantry. Area sponsors include Sunwheel Health Foods and Compounded Solutions in Pharmacy, both of Monroe.

For more information, registration forms, and pledge sheets, email lorettajay@parasolservices.com or visit the website www.connceliac.tripod.com.
