NAACP Planning 50th Anniversary Freedom Fund Dinner

DANBURY — To commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Greater Danbury National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a “Freedom Fund Dinner” is being planned for Thursday, October 18. The event will be at the Ethan Allen Hotel.

The Freedom Fund Dinner, a national event that will occur with each chapter, is an opportunity for local business, community leaders, and residents to join together for an evening of support, reflection, remembrance, and appreciation of their chapter.

The Greater Danbury NAACP chapter will welcome keynote speaker Raphael G. Warnock, senior pastor of the historical Ebenezer Baptist Church (home to the distinguished Civil Rights phenomena Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr, and Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr) of Atlanta, Ga.

Tickets, priced at $100, will go on sale August 20. For details on the dinner, contact Cheryl Price at 482-1235 or Cindy Clarke at 994-0099.

The Greater Danbury NAACP had a smaller celebration of its 50 years in existence on June 10. The chapter’s officers in 1957 included Chanuney Hodins, chairman, and Roy Wilkins, secretary. The chapter’s current president is the Reverend Ivan S. Pitts.

For more information about the life and history of the NAACP and the Greater Danbury chapter, contact Sam Hyman at 790-4014.
