Listening To Newtown

To the Editor:

Unfortunately, I missed Newtown’s great celebration of all it offers its citizens — the annual Labor Day Parade. Had I been there, I would have proudly marched as a candidate for the Legislative Council from District 3.

My husband Bill and I have lived in Newtown for 37 years. Our sons were educated in Newtown schools, and participated in the wide variety of excellent programs offered by the Parks and Rec Department. Having taught social studies at Newtown High School for 20 years, I saw firsthand the dedication and professionalism of the entire K–12 staff. I know and love this town and the quality of life it provides to those who live here. I’m proud to reside in a town where so many citizens volunteer because they care about maintaining and enhancing its quality of life.

During the next few weeks I look forward to meeting many of you as I walk your neighborhood and make phone calls. I will listen to your ideas about how Newtown can effectively plan for the future. I want to understand your priorities in how to balance the needs of our schools with those of town government while containing taxes. In the meantime, please feel free to e-mail me at jbrookes222@yahoo.com, or call me at 426-9889.

Sincerely

Jan Lee Brookes
