Newtown Storms Into State Championship Before Falling
Newtownâs U11 boyâs soccer team, the Storm, reached the state championship game and fell 4-2 to Ridgefield this past Sunday.
The Storm advanced to the pinnacle game with a semifinal round win over Weston.
Newtown dominated Saturdays playoff game against Weston with a 5-2 triumph. Newtownâs offense was led by a goal each from Austin Engler, Mike Meyers, and Robert Katrinak, and two goals from Hayes Kelchner. With multiple shots on goal and deft passing from Thomas Leuci and Shane Gattey, the Storm dominated from the start.
Led by the defensive efforts of Jamie Cochrane, Connery Mayer, Owen Samson, and Forest Weatherby, Weston had little to with which to work.Â
In the Championship game on Sunday, Ridgefield jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Newtown quickly answered with a goal from Austin Engler off a great pass from Sebastian Forero. Ridgefield than made it 2-1 but a header from Jamie Cochrane off a Mike Meyers corner kick evened the score at 2-2.
Ridgefield came out in the second half and scored two more goals ending Newtownâs championship hopes. Richard Ciamarra and Sam Grossano were strong on offense and Nathan Augenbraun played tough defense in the final game.
