Mysteries And Thrillers Writing Workshop At Library For Youth

Signups for the Young Adult Mysteries and Adventure Thrillers Creative Writing Group are underway at the C.H. Booth Library. The group will meet from 6 to 8 pm, for five consecutive Thursday evenings, April 1, 8, 15, 29 and May 6. There is no class during school break. A makeup session is scheduled for May 20, if needed. The free class is limited to ten students in grades 6 through 8. Participants are expected to attend all five sessions, and preference is given to Newtown students and residents.

Julie Stern, retired teacher, writer, and Newtown resident, with assistance from Philip Kotch, will lead the group. All sessions will allow time for writing and sharing stories in progress, as well as one-on-one communication between adults and young people.

Students will be presented with a set of possibilities each week, including titles like “Peril at the Parade,” “Nasty in the Neighborhood,” and “Snuffed at the Ski Lodge,” scenarios that begin with the protagonist doing something ordinary when sudden, unexpected events turn it into a dangerous or troublesome situation, settings, motivations, plot developments, and character development.

The Young Adult Creative Writing program is funded by the Friends of C.H. Booth Library. For more information, speak to Margaret Brown, young adult librarian. Signup online at chboothlibrary.org or call 203-426-4533.
