Connecticut Postal Workers Win

Order Of The Yellow Jersey

There is a new flag flying at the Newtown Post Office to honor Connecticut postal workers who were judged tops in the country for their performance and teamwork in satisfying customers.

The “Order of the Yellow Jersey” flag features the US Postal Service logo with the body of an eagle emblazoned in yellow to mirror the symbol of excellence worn by the daily leader and winner of the Tour de France bicycle race. For the last four years that champion has been Lance Armstrong, a member of the US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team.

Newtown Postmaster Paul Marciniak said the award was based on a survey done by the Gallup Organization, which polls the public on a wide range of topics including business and the economic, politics and elections, social issues and policy, and lifestyle.

The Postal Service’s Office of the Consumer Advocate used three key elements of Gallup’s survey data –– accuracy of delivery, consistency of delivery, and professionalism in serving retail customers –– in combination with overall performance to determine which of the 83 postal clusters in the United States would receive the award.

At the flag-raising ceremony at the post office on Commerce Road, Mr Marciniak told the branch’s 54 employees that the award was “a direct reflection of the work you do every day, not only at the counter or on the phone but also the carriers, who are also windows of the post office.”

The Rev Robert Weiss of St Rose Church led the assembled group in prayer and praised the postal workers for their “sensitivity to all of the poor in town by holding the annual [postal carriers] food drive.” First Selectman Herb Rosenthal also addressed the postal workers, congratulating them for their efforts that resulted in the award.
