SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) â An anonymous donor has given $4 million to the Springfield Museums Association, one of the largest gifts ever received by the private group.
The donor will be known in the spring of 2008, when the Museum of Fine Arts is named after that benefactor.
Half of the gift will set up an endowment to help the Museum of Fine Arts to book high-quality traveling art exhibitions and present major shows from its collections.
This is expected to attract more visitors to Springfield and increase museum attendance. The rest of the money will fund the construction of the new Museum of Springfield History.
The association has so far raised a total of $4 million to pay for the $7 million project.
The Museum of Fine Arts was established in 1933 and features an internationally renowned collection of European and American paintings, sculpture and works on paper.
