Five Novice Trinity Choristers ‘Whited’

On Sunday, June 1, five musicians of different ages — Elizabeth Chamiec-Case, Jeffrey Haylon, Charles Romano, Emily Toby and Danny Toby — were brought into full membership of the Trinity Choristers, the choir for girls grade 3-12 and boys grade 3 through voice change at Trinity Episcopal Church.

After singing in the choir for a year, they were “whited” into full membership with a special ceremony in front of the parish, meaning they now have the honor of wearing a white cotta over their black surplice or robe.

Trinity has a longstanding tradition of musical excellence. Under the leadership of Organist and Minister of Music Fiona Smith Sutherland, The Trinity Choristers has grown significantly in number and ability. This choir provides an excellent foundation for later music experiences, allowing the children and youth to sing together both accessible and challenging repertoire.

With music ranging from medieval chant to contemporary anthems, the Trinity Choristers deepen their sense of history, liturgy (worship), language, and art, as well as their ability to interpret both text and music. Ms Smith Sutherland’s instruction balances warmth and humor with structure and attention to detail, nurturing the development of accomplished musicians and responsible young people who, as they grow to adulthood, understand what it is to be at the vibrant heart of worship.

The choir is also a member of the Royal School of Church Music in America and as such, participates in the Voice for Life training program for choristers.

All children in Newtown and beyond are welcome to be part of the group of singers; membership in Trinity or any church is not necessary — just an understanding of the importance of music in a child’s life.

Contact Fiona Smith Sutherland at Trinity Episcopal Church, 426-9070, extension 11, or MusicMinister@TrinityNewtownCT.org for more information.
