Fraser-Woods School Holds Final

Professional Art Exhibit Of The School Year

By Eliza Hallabeck

Fraser-Woods Montessori School has been celebrating art throughout the school year, and Friday, April 3, marked the last professional art exhibit at the school for the year.

There will still be one more art show with the students art work on display, but the most recent exhibit featured artists Derek Leka, Julia Stalvey, Lara Skye and Dan Hamilton. Tim Kernan played piano for the event.

“It was great,” said Fraser-Woods art teacher Claudia Mitchell about the event. She said a lot of people ended up coming and a lot of art work was sold for the artists, and added that a fair number of people came to the event from outside of the school community. Roughly 100 people attended the exhibit.

The date has not yet been set for the final show of the year, the student’s work, but it will be up roughly from the second week of May until June. The opening for the show is still in the works.

At the most event, middle school students were on hand to guide visitors through the art work with a game that was created by the students. Visitors were given a piece of paper that had phrases on it to describe a piece of art work, and when the visitor thought they had found the art work that went with their description, they could unfold the paper to reveal the title of the piece they should have found.

“[The students] enjoyed it,” said Ms Mitchell. “They loved being at the opening.”

In talking with the students after the event Ms Mitchell said, “They really loved the chance to meet all of the artists.”

One student told Ms Mitchell that she enjoyed one piece of work, and began speaking to the artist about it. When the student’s family saw the work, they decided they also like it and bought it.

“I think it was a great success,” Ms Mitchell said about the night.

Having artists exhibit at the school throughout the year has also been a success, Ms Mitchell said, and it has inspired an idea to continue to bring art into the school for next year.

“It’s sort of turning into an art gallery in the school,” said Ms Mitchell.

Throughout the school year students have been learning with artists and incorporating art into all the areas of their learning. The game created by students for this last exhibit was an example of partnering the learning of art with writing.

“It’s been so well received,” Ms Mitchell said.
