Volunteers Honored By Masonicare

Masonicare at Newtown hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on May 3 to thank the many area residents from walks of life and age groups who freely give their time and talent for the benefit of the residents and patients of Masonicare at Newtown.

Administrator John Sweeney and several staff members were pleased to honor these outstanding volunteers who give so much to bring joy to others.

“At Masonicare at Newtown, we do everything we can to enhance the quality of life of our residents and patients,” Mr Sweeny said. “These wonderful volunteers, who are always so willing to lend a helping hand wherever it’s needed, make it easier for us to provide that something extra. Their contributions are very important — and sincerely appreciated.”

In addition to the many adult volunteers from the community, junior and resident volunteers were also recognized for assisting staff and residents throughout the year with programs, events, projects, and administrative tasks.

The Junior Scholarship Award was presented to Nicholas Urban of Trumbull, a student at Trumbull High School, who will be attending College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, in the fall.

Volunteer Coordinator Susan Sonnati, manager of Masonicare at Newtown’s Therapeutic Recreation Department, praised Nicholas for his volunteer efforts.

“Nick has been a faithful, dependable volunteer over the past four years, generously sharing his time with our residents — in between school, plays, karate, his family and more,” she said. “He’s shown true compassion while working with them and says his volunteer experiences have given him the gift of humility — and knowledge of things he couldn’t have learned at school. Everyone at Masonicare at Newtown wishes him all the best in college and his professional career.”
