Historical Society Open House And Quilting Demo

Newtown Historical Society will hold an open house to at its headquarters, The Matthew Curtiss House at 44 Main Street, on Sunday, December 2, to coincide with the Newtown Youth & Family Services Annual Holiday Festival.

The house-museum is a fine example of Connecticut saltbox architecture. It was constructed circa 1750 and purchased by Matthew Curtiss, Jr, in 1781. In 1970 the historical society purchased the property and restored the house to its original condition.

The public is invited to visit and tour the building, which will be decorated for the season, between noon and 4 pm. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed and appreciated. Junior and senior docents will be available to answer questions about the house and its history and will provide guided tours by request.

Donna Betts of Newtown, who quilts by hand, will also be conducting a quilting demonstration that afternoon. She will discuss the process from start to finish and will have on display quilts in various stages of completion.

Newtown Historical Society is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization. To join or for additional information, call 203-426-5937.
