Disturbance

Police said they charged two neighbors each with creating a public disturbance following an incident in Sandy Hook on the evening of September 10. The incident occurred at 7 Washington Avenue, police said.

Police said they issued infraction tickets to Liam Boorman, 30, of 7-A Washington Avenue and to Kathryn Masotta, 42, of 7 Washington Avenue. Court appearances are scheduled for September 21 in Danbury, police said.

Calculators

Police are continuing to seek the owners of several handheld electronic calculators, which were stolen from Newtown High School students in October 2000.

A recent push to find the calculator owners resulted in one person claiming a calculator that had been stolen, police said.

Police are still holding several of the seven calculators, which were stolen from unattended backpacks in the school’s boys’ locker room while students were in class during the week of October 16, 2000.

Following the incident, police charged three boys under age 16 with the thefts.

Police ask the owners of the stolen calculators to contact high school Security Officer Rich Novia, police Sergeant Darlene Froehlich, or School Resource Officer Robert Koetsch to claim the devices.

SUV Vs Auto

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 302 and Boggs Hill Road about 5 pm September 13.

Police said motorist William R. Bircher, 57, of Harwinton, who was driving a 1993 Honda del Sol coupe westbound on Route 302, stopped for oncoming traffic and was waiting to turn left onto Boggs Hill Road.

The Honda was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Emmanuel Cambra, III, 37, of Bethel, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer, police said. There were no injuries.

Police issued Cambra a written warning for following too closely. Police issued Bircher a written warning failure to use a turn signal.

Osborn Hill

Police report an accident on Osborn Hill Road in Sandy Hook about 11 am September 3.

Police said an unknown vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane while a 1992 Honda Civic driven by Daniel A. DaSilva, 27, of 14 Leopard Drive, Sandy Hook, was traveling westbound.

 The Honda veered to the right to avoid the other vehicle, but in doing so, it struck some rock ledge, police said. The two vehicles did not make contact, police said. DaSilva was not injured. The driver of the unknown vehicle left the scene before police arrived.

  

Two-Truck Crash

A two-truck accident occurred on South Main Street near Mile Hill Road on September 8, police report.

Trucker Brad Ludovicy, 37, of New Milford, who was driving a roll-off dumpster truck, was stopped at a red light on South Main Street when his truck was struck from behind by trucker Francis Coughlin, 67, of Danbury, who was driving a dump truck, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Coughlin a written warning for following too closely.

Five MV Charges

Police lodged five motor vehicle charges against motorist Marvin Hopkins, 41, of Bridgeport on September 13. Police charged Hopkins with operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, failure to return a suspended driver’s license to the state, failure to carry automotive insurance, failure to have a valid automotive emissions sticker, and failure to have a turn signal.

Police said Hopkins is scheduled to appear in court September 28 to answer the charges.

Unsafe Backing

Police said an accident occurred on September 16 at 11:29 am when Jack Guidi, 22, of 45 Hucko Trail in Sandy Hook backed a 1997 Toyota pickup truck out of the driveway of Resurrection Cemetery on South Main Street. A 1997 Buick LeSabre, driven by George J. Tosker, 88, of Heritage Village in Southbury, was approaching on South Main Street and struck the pickup truck. Mr Tosker was transported to Danbury Hospital by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance   Guidi was ticketed.

Written Warnings

Dion M. Roach, 26, of 114 Turkey Roost Road, Monroe, was given written warnings for an accident that occurred at 2:45 pm on September 11 on Main Street at Martin Street.

Police said a 2001 Nissan Xterra station wagon driven by Chhim Toy, 31, of 18 Mechanic Street, Newtown, stopped to make a right turn into a driveway at 78 Main Street. The 1989 Toyota Camry driven by Roach attempted to pass on the right and collided with Toy’s vehicle. There were no injuries. Roach was given a written warning for passing on the right and failure to carry an insurance card. 

Multiple Charges

Police said Marvin Hopkins, 41, of Bridgeport, was stopped at 10:43 am on September 13 at the intersection of Hattertown and Key Rock roads when he was observed driving a white van with no front driver’s side turn signal lamp. When he was stopped, the police officer noticed an emissions sticker violation. Further investigation showed Hopkins had no insurance card and his driver’s license was suspended. He was arrested and cited for five violations: the missing turn signal site, the emissions sticker, failure to carry insurance, failure to return his license to the state, and operating while under suspension.

Criminal Mischief

A homeowner on Farm Meadow Road called police on September 14 and said that sometime between 10 pm on September 13 and 8:20 am on September 14, someone used bright orange spray paint to vandalize the house. The paint was sprayed on the north side, the front, and the south side of the house. Damage is estimated at $30,000. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Newtown Police Department at 270-4255.

Electronics Theft

Police are investigating the reported theft of several electronic entertainment items from the home at 20 Washington Avenue. The alleged crime is believed to have taken place between September 13-16.

Hit A Guardrail

Maria Santos and her passenger avoided injury following a crash along Main Street last Thursday. According to police, Ms Santos, 50, of Division Street, Danbury, was headed north on Main Street in a 1998 Nissan Sentra when she became distracted, misjudging the intersection of Main Street and Currituck Road. The vehicle skidded onto Summit Road, striking a wooden guardrail.

Police issued the driver a written warning.

Avoiding A Dog

Seventeen-year-old Terrence O’Neill managed to avoid the dog that ran out in front of his car Sunday. In doing so, however, the Newtown resident ended up striking a bridge abutment and his 1971 Dodge Dart sustained considerable damage.

The incident took place as Mr O’Neill of 28 Still Hill Road was traveling south on Walnut Tree Hill Road. Police did not issue the young man a ticket.

Three Charges

The smell of marijuana from a car stopped along Glen Road Monday alerted police. A subsequent search of Brookfield resident Christopher Bellatoni’s car revealed an unspecified amount of marijuana.

Mr Bellatoni, 27, of 7 Juniper Lane, Brookfield, had been stopped for a simple trespassing matter. Police also found a BB gun in the vehicle. The accused was taken into custody and charged with all three counts.
