Wasserman Award Established At Mount Sinai
The Mount Sinai School of Medicine announced the establishment of the Louis R. Wasserman, MD, Medical Scholar Career Development Award this week at a reception at the school on Tuesday in New York City.
The award was created by Newtownâs longtime State Representative Julia Wasserman in honor of her late husband, who was an internationally renowned authority on hematology and was director of Mount Sinaiâs Department of Hematology. He was deeply devoted to medical scholarship and the medical school at Mount Sinai. Dr Wasserman died in 1999.
The newly created Wasserman Award is designed to promote promising research at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine by providing multiyear grants to the best-qualified young physician-investigators within the Department of Medicine. The grants will provide qualifying faculty at the school who are selected as âWasserman scholarsâ with salary support for âprotected timeâ to conduct critical research at a time in their careers when they may not have access to more conventional foundation or federal grants.
âThroughout his career, Lou always had a deep appreciation for scholarship and the men and women engaged in medical research,â Mrs Wasserman said this week. âI know he would be pleased to know that there is now a Wasserman Award at Mount Sinai to encourage that scholarship and research.â
