Occupation: I founded K. M. URSO & Co., LLC, in August 2003. This firm provides US and international tax consulting and compliance services for individuals and businesses. The website is www.kmurso.com.

I spent 13 years before that as a tax attorney with General Electric in Shelton, and before that I worked as a tax attorney for Price-Waterhouse and then KPMG, both in Stamford.

I took my law degree at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich., and received a BBA in accounting at the University of Cincinnati.

How Long In Newtown: We moved here in December 2000 and we live on the Bethel border behind George’s Pizza. We already had local ties to Newtown since my mother and stepfather, Shane and George Miller, moved to Main Street the year before that. And my husband’s parents, Connie and Clarence Urso, had lived in Sandy Hook for 15 years before moving to Southbury recently. She works at the Booth Library on Mondays.

Biggest Change You Have Seen In Town: There has been a change, or you could say a new awareness, in my own point of view as a result of serving on the Board of Finance for two years. I have become more aware of Newtown residents’ desires and concerns about several controversial issues in town, such as what will happen at Fairfield Hills and how to handle that property once the town owns it, how to pay for education, and how to preserve open space. When the budget failed three times during the spring of 2003, I realized how some people felt about the burden of high  taxes.

Family: My husband, John Urso, owns and manages rental property in Danbury. He is also a real estate agent. We have two boys. Jack, 8, is going into the third grade at Head O’ Meadow School and he loves karate. Mark, 6, went to kindergarten at St Rose this year, and he’ll be in the first grade at Head O’ Meadow this fall. He loves baseball. They both love the water.

Hobbies: Boarding is a big hobby of mine –– snow boarding in winter and “wake boarding” in summer. Boarding is like water skiing except you ride the waves on a skateboard. You need choppy water for wake boarding. Smooth water that is flat as a pancake is still best for water skiing.

Favorite TV Show: I’ve got a few that I really enjoy: Scrubs because it’s only a half-hour long and is funny, and on HBO, Curb Your Enthusiasm, which is written by the creator of Seinfeld who is also the star, Six Feet Under, and Sopranos.

Organizations: I was on the Board of Finance for two years, when it first started, until June 2003. I am treasurer for the Board of Trustees of the Cyrenius H. Booth Library, and I am also treasurer for the Newtown Business and Professional Women. Since February 1999, I’ve been on the board of directors of a NASDAQ company called Travelzoo.com. They maintain an up-to-the-minute record of all available spaces on airlines, cruise lines, etc, and people can find great travel deals for specific dates and times by accessing the inventory of available seats or rooms. It’s a wonderful way to plan a trip.

Most Vivid Memory About Newtown: Maybe because my mom lives there, I have a lot of happy memories associated with Main Street and the Matthew Curtiss House –– especially the Holiday House Tour and the luminarias in December. Most recently, I was so glad the Relay For Life was successful in raising a lot of money. My mother co-chaired the Survivor Meeting, and I loved seeing her so involved and watching the whole town come out to support this cause.

Favorite Vacation Spot: Shane and George have a house in Shelter Island, Long Island, N.Y., and my father’s houseboat on Lake Cumberland, Ky., is another favorite destination. I’m from the Midwest — Cincinnati — so I enjoy going back there.

Personal Philosophy: Go with the flow. Don’t sweat the small stuff –– and don’t sweat the big stuff either!

Our family loves the outdoors and being out in the snow. With the kids, we’ve go a favorite saying that sort of works for me in a more general way: Don’t eat the yellow snow.
