SUV Rolls Over On Interstate 84
State police report that motorist Harry K. Fitzgerald, Jr, 58, of Wolcott was driving a 1998 Honda Element sport-utility vehicle eastward on Interstate 84, near the Bancroft Road overpass, about 4:40 pm on July 8 in heavy traffic, when the traffic in front of the Honda suddenly came to a stop.
Fitzgerald swerved to the left to avoid colliding with a tractor-trailer truck that was in front of him and then went off the roadway onto the highwayâs median, striking metal-beam guardrailing, causing the SUV to roll over and be heavily damaged, state police said.
Fitzgerald received minor cuts in the accident, state police said. Sandy Hook firefighters went to the scene. Mr Fitzgerald is Newtownâs land use enforcement officer. He was off-duty when the accident occurred.
State police said they issued Fitzgerald a misdemeanor summons on a charge of driving while under suspension. State police said he also failed to stay in the proper lane.
