EMT Course At Fairfield University
EMT Course At Fairfield University
FAIRFIELD â In collaboration with the Department of Public Safety (DPS), University College at Fairfield University will offer the basic emergency medical technician (EMT) course in this fall.
The course, which will begin September 11, meets education requirements established by the State of Connecticut and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and is requisite for EMT certification candidates who are compelled to pass the National Registry examination.
With a total of more than 140 hours of classes, the comprehensive EMT course exceeds the state requirement of 130 hours of instruction and practice prior to taking the two-part examination. Successful completion of the course and, by extension, the exam, ensures EMT certification through the National Registry in 30 participating states.
Areas of instruction covered through lectures and hands-on practice will include CPR, general pharmacology, respiratory, cardiovascular and OB/GYN emergencies, musculoskeletal, head and spine trauma, hazardous materials, ambulance operations, emergency medical techniques for children, and scene safety.
The course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 pm, September 11 through December 13; and four Saturdays, September 29, October 13, November 10, and December 8, from 8 am to 4 pm. The cost of the course is $650. Text for the course is additional. There is the added value of 14.4 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEU) offered.
Course instructor Joseph Laucella, a part-time officer of DPS and a certified EMS instructor, is also operations manager of Echo Hose Ambulance in Shelton. Several experienced colleagues from Echo Hose Ambulance and DPS will assist him in the practical applications of the course.
