Community Education Program Doles Out âSugar Tipsâ
SOUTHBURY â The public is invited to register for a free four-week diabetes education program hosted by Brownstein Jewish Family Service. âSugar Tips: Recognition and Prevention of Diabetesâ is a four-week series presented by Sandra Micalizzi, APRN, CDE, the Heart Center of Greater Waterburyâs clinical nurse specialist.
The program will meet on four Mondays, October 26 and November 2, 9, and 16, from 10 to 11 am, in the library at the Jewish Federation, 444 Main Street North.
Ms Micalizziâs goal is to help the public recognize symptoms and understand metabolic syndrome and factors associated with the development of diabetes. The series includes suggestions for lifestyle modifications to prevent diabetes with an emphasis on diet and exercise.
âIt is important for the public to know that diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease,â said Ms Micalizzi. âBy preventing diabetes you can help prevent heart disease.â Diabetes is a widespread health problem with more than 6.2 million individuals with undiagnosed diabetes in the United States.â
