Middle School Team Wins Jockey Hollow Tourney
The Newtown Middle School eighth grade boys â basketball team completed its season on February 17 as champions of the Jockey Hollow Tournament and a perfect 12-0.
In the first round game the Lions defeated Whisconier 69-34. The Lions limited Whisconier to only 13 points in the second half to pull away for the victory. Troy Frangione led all scorers with 20 points with aggressive drives to the basket and some timely deep shooting. Julian Dunn pounded in 19 points from his center position and dominated the boards to limit Whisconierâs offense to no second-chance looks. Will Dalton and Colton Smith each scored 7 points apiece and patrolled the perimeter on defense. Bobby Archiere played a near flawless game on the boards.
Both teams shot extremely well from the 3-point line, with the Lions making 6 of 10 compared to Whisconierâs 8 for 16. The difference in the game came from the bench as Harry Depuy added 6 points and Nick âAll Day IIâ Roche added 4 points. Bryce Decker, Jeremy Doski, and David Matthews also played solid defense off the bench.
The eighth grade boys defeated Jockey Hollow in the championship game 73-45. Maintaining a 10-point lead at the half, the Lions exploded in the second half to outscore Jockey Hollow 33-15 to secure the victory. Julian Dunn led all scorers with 22 points as he dominated inside the paint yet again and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Troy Frangione had another big night from the point, scoring 18 points and being named the tournamentâs MVP. Colton Smith added 13 points off the fast break and Will Dalton had 7 points to go along with his aggressive perimeter defense.
Bobby Archiere and Jeremy Doski had superb games inside, controlling the boards on both the defensive and offensive ends. Harry Depuy and Bryce Decker combined for 9 points off the bench, and Nick Roche and David Matthews played solid perimeter defense to shut down the Jockey Hollow shooters. The Newtown Lions outscored opponents this year by an average score of 61-35 and dominated in every facet of the game.
